I struggle to understand how anyone can in all seriousness suggest they were promised a Brexit outcome. The prime minister said he wanted to renegotiate the UK's relationship with the EU and then give people the "simple choice" between staying in under those new terms, or leaving the EU. A simple choice. Stay or leave. No half in half out. The people will decide. Legally the referendum was advisory but Cameron clearly said that the result will be respected. Good - you agree. In or out, no flim flam. I do indeed. However I don't get to vote w/c January 14th. so my opinion is entirely irrelevant. But I should add that if we don't leave without a deal then the government will be guilty of totally destroying our democracy. Under those circumstances I think the best we can hope for is that a very large number of people will be so incensed by Parliament's flim-flam that they'll take to the streets. Parliament is under no obligation to allow us to leave without a deal. But if they stop it then those who voted for brexit will have every right to feel betrayed. Cameron f***ed up again by putting party before country whilst passing it off as an exercise in direct democracy. I'm rather hoping we might see a better political system emerge from the ashes. Elites very rarely willing give up power without revolution regardless of how bad it gets....the 2008 crises showed that....nothing changed.....Hell, all throughout history has shown that....It needed revolution in good old mother Russia back in 1918 for a new power dynamic to come on. The only two instances I can think of are South Africa....and that country has predictably gone to sh1t....and the British with India, which isn't quite the same as they had a power base to go back to.

Whilst the British aren't noted for their revolutionary zeal, the lot we currently have in power seem intent on pushing the boundaries of what we will tolerate. I'm rather hoping that this time they've pushed too far.

We need revolution, not violent but quiet. Beveridge revolutionised the social system and introduced the welfare state. We need the same now to overhaul our delapidated parliamentary system, the buildings are crumbling the empire lost but nothing has changed has it. It is ridiculous and everything it attempts fails completely. We lost the empire but parliament just carried on the same.

I'm rather hoping that this time they've pushed too far. You can say that again....they are even sleepwalking through giving away their own country. In terms of revolution....of whatever kind it would take the collapse of the welfare system.....if the pensions and benefits go.....that's when the s*** would hit the fan. Tux has been predicting a collapse, so you never know.. The French have a much lower threshold......and while I don't support violence I can't say I blame them. With Trump in the White House and Corbyn sniffing around for an election we can't say these are boring times......I'm not predicting smooth sailing ahead but there you go.
