They skipped past twenty countries to go to the UK. What was wrong with Germany and France? The rate of attrition between the numbers that arrived in Belgrade compared to the number being picked up by the coastguard would suggest that the answer is nothing is wrong with Germany and France. I'm not saying we should welcome more immigrants. I'm just pointing out that unless the problems that result in people making these journeys are solved then we're gonna be dealing with this s*** indefinitely. And I'm kind of assuming that even some of the more badass nationalists on here would be even happier if we didn't have to do that.

Their ecomomy is no longer seen as dynamic and there is a huge problem with filling skills gaps and a huge labour shortage, the low birthrate high life expectancy their economy is completely unsustainable Not to mention all the kiddie p*** that you can find on every street corner along with institutionalised paedophilia. One of the more disturbing aspects of my trip to Japan.

Japanese culture is full of unhealthy repressions that's for sure. Paedeophilia is an unfortunate problem for all societies.

and that is why they will be sent back. I hope you are right but the other day the ex head of the Border Force explained these folks are being assisted and exploited by criminal gangs and will probably be allowed to stay. And that of course is the issue we are so poor at deporting people that the traffickers and migrants know that once you get here the odds are in your favour. We don't seem able to deport convicted sex offenders let alone someone who just shouldn't be here. A friend of mine is an anthropologist and is currently undertaking a long term study of migrant life in Paris. She is a card carrying "I love Corbyn" lefty. But even she has to admit that the way the French treat immigrants is way worse than the UK so its no wonder that France is just seen as a rest stop. Apparently the French pay lip service to the niceties around asylum. It is very difficult to claim in France and unlike the UK your chances of success are low hence the illegal migrants camps. If you are lucky? and do get it no one will offer you a job anyway. Unlike the UK its French people first. Now of course the French will deny this and point to all there laws but it's one thing to pass a law its another to enforce it. So my feeling is this is why people want to come here, better chance of staying and more likely to get a job.

Although the other side of the same coin is the Syrian brain surgeon and his family who the BBC filmed on a small boat crossing from Turkey to Greece in the summer. If he reached the UK and applied for asylum I don't think it could be argued that we couldn't find something useful for him to do. Edited by steve1984 (27 Dec 2018 9.23am)

Staff shortages? I think if I said only Americans can work in burger bars there would be an uproar. I would suggest they try harder to persuade local people rather than trying to import "talent" from Asia. Maybe they are not paying enough? As for the price of ingredients rather than blaming Brexit they should be telling the government to sign free trade deals with countries that produce this stuff. When it comes to agricultural products the EU is a massive trade monopoly designed to protect the southern EU farmers. It's true you can import food from anywhere in the world but only in limited quantities above a threshold and the tariffs kick in big time. JRM has mentioned this on many occasions food should be cheaper once we have left.
