Just to confirm – as there seems some confusion on the other side of the Atlantic, although I acknowledge geography isn't a strong suit in the US and A – I am not, nor ever have been, a member of the Scottish persuasion. Durham isn't in Scotland and so I won't be moving to Scotland, independent or otherwise.

(so HoL doesnt support cyrillic script...just makes it even harder to decipher. Pick the spelling mistakes out of that one!)

Interestingly, it does in the quote box as I discovered when about to make a Cyrillic Smith joke...

Just noticed this, which articulates her unBritishness quite nicely, I think:

Nail on head. Been thinking the same thing for decades. She was no patriot. She admired the individual dog eat dog way and not the then British sense of community and fair play. She didn't really get us. A few million Brits put her on a pedestal which is simply baffling if you take the unions and Falklands out of the equation and unmask her as she really was. An iniquitous marketeer and a malignant vandal.

She divided us and, for a while, conquered us. Hopefully, her awful legacies - Chavdom , homelessness, crime rates, traffic pollution, love of money at the expense of many, big business having too much influence on Government policy, dumbing down, unemployment and desolation - will be radically reversed. Won't be any time soon though.

I envy the Scots for having the ultimate get-out clause, but dread them making the only rational decision. Can you extend the border south to the Humber, then I can move back home to Durham and be independent, too?

Edited by Pinky (21 Apr 2013 10.22am)

I'm willing to bet a 1000 pounds neither Pinky or Mc Kermit move to an Independent Scotland

Too cold.

But the worst types of patriots are the people who voluntarily cross an ocean and go to an entirely different continent yet still profess how proud they are to be English when they are nothing of the sort and don't want to come back , don't you think?

Me? Quite happy to visit the rainy mothercountry a few times a year but have the pleasant climate of the SW the rest of e time.

No geographical confusion Pinkers I'm well aware where Durham is having actually worked at The University many moons ago. One of my old girlfriends happens to be a Health & Safety exec there as well.

Have to be very careful how I answer that one. The English Channel is not an ocean and Macedonia is on the same continent, but I dont feel a 'bad' patriot. I am still very pro British (not just English, honest). So I am sure others who have travelled further afield can claim the same. Being away also gives you a different prespective on patriotism and Britishness, as well as seeing how we are viewed by others.

I travelled 1000 miles to find a better job and, 18 years later, I dont regret it!

Quite interesting that this thread is rumbling on and she is being blamed for all the countries ills.

Why or how you can pick a random point in history and blame every subsequnt event on the the then leader is beyond me

Seems ok for Ian Holloway to be blamed for the fact that Murray has run out of goals for the season, on a very respectable 29.

T'is true though there is usually more rationale applied to any given argument in General Talk compared to PT
