The chief rabii has written an article in the Sundays claiming the use of the word "genocide" in Gaza somehow under values the suffering and horror of the Holocaust. Unless international law prescribes that word to only apply after a certain threshold is reached (?) it doesn’t no matter how articulatey the argument is presented it is wrong. The holocaust, the great leap forward, stalins purge and other events where deaths left the scale were given their own titles as genocide simply didn't cover it. However, the real issue here is issue blindness. How can a man of God indirectly defend what is fast becoming a massacre of the innocents? The West, especially the US, represent an electorate that also thinks this way. Israel can do as it pleases. Any criticism is anti semitic. Even terming the remote bombing and deaths of thousands as genocide is somehow wrong and indirectly anti semitic. How can you forge an intelligent, balanced, international policy from such a wholly partial base? You can't and I don't think it's a good idea to try. As soon as you try to create an enforcement arm you create a division of interest. What is a far more successful move in my view is the use of humanitarian agencies like the Red Cross that don't involve themselves in politics. That's why it is so so important to ensure that they aren't used for anything other than what it says on the tin. I think in this way you can have the widest number of countries agree to sign up and in this way reduce the most suffering. Even so some countries are comprised of such low quality cultures that it isn't even really possible even with this. In terms of enforcement of 'international justice' which you seem to be asking for.....well that's called good old fashioned war and it's looking probable at some point. As for what Israel is doing.....if you are going to have an Israel this was always what would happen, either to them or their enemies. I agree, what they are doing isn't morally defensible....Same as it wasn't in 47/48.....However, this sob story was created by European guilt over their sob story + many backhanders. They then very intelligently subverted the biggest bully in the park to....well quite ridiculous levels....shameful levels. However I'll make the point that what Muslims did to Christians and Jews all over the now Islamic world wasn't spoken about and yet it happened in silence. No lefty tears for them. Bethlehem, the birthplace of Christ is run by Muslims. At least the Jews fight for their god and ethnicity instead of modern Christians letting their religion die from secular universalism. The Saudis are no fans of Israel, why would they be....However, the aren't interested in war in the region for several reasons. The biggest reason of all being that they like being rich. Something the west seems a little dim about. [Tweet Link]

All the moral indignation over the Ukraine invasion by Russia, and the rattling of sabres over Taiwan and China, all seem a bit hollow now.

Bill Bryson - a complete Anglophile who lives here - describes us as "bat-sh1t mental" and not wholly in a good way. However, the US is a complex place to understand and even more complex to govern. Take gaming. You can have a mobster blow a prostitutes head off, but you can't have her folate him. Err? Then take up your issue with a rabidly anti-interventionist Republican (have they learned nothing from WWII?) and you will ask him as follows. Do you want to fund Ukraine? Hell no! America first. Do you want to support Taiwan? Hell no! America first. Do you want to support any international campaign? Hell no! So you will support the ending of financial and political support for Israel? WHAT!!??! Hell no! It's religion what done it. And I wonder for how long.

Silvertop, you have given me some enlightenment. People making the big calls, are indeed bat-5hlt crazy. Which makes them unpredictable and irrational in their decisions. And their motivations are wide and varied, and 'secret'. It's impossible to second-guess these psychopaths. Or should I say, democratically elected leaders.

Not democratic nor nice regimes but that's how they work anyway. It's how America has been working since the Biden administration took over and it's going to continue if Trump takes over.....just the other way around.

"Say what you see", as Roy Walker used to say. I've seen news of the invasion from many sources, and many photographs and satellite images. How you could come to a different outcome from the Court, is perplexing. And yet will the UK and USA stop sending arms to Israel ?

Personally I maintain we should have nothing to do with this human tragedy whatsoever other than humanitarian aid.

Egyptian President Sisi asserted that Egypt keeps the Rafah border crossing with Gaza open 24/7, saying he will be 'held accountable in front of God' if he blocked aid from entering the besieged strip. He said Israel is putting restrictions on aid entering Gaza, highlighting a drop from 600 to 220 trucks daily.
