I know Nato is tip-toeing around getting directly involved. But I wonder at what point the war will escalate ? Suppose the Ukrainians hold the Russian advance or even push it back ? would Russia just retreat ? or would it use more weaponry, and possibly illegal stuff ? Nato cannot get involved, whatever happens. It's not in their mandate. Individual members might, independent of Nato, but unless a Nato member is attacked, it won't respond. I think Nato is between a rock and a hard place. They would like to help, but also know the help that can legitimately be provided must be by its members acting alone and not in Nato's name, but that won't either stop the Russians seeing it differently or, unfortunately, it only delaying the inevitable. They would probably half hope it finished asap, so the heat could be turned down, the guerilla war begun and the sanctions allowed to bite.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

If the ukranian president actually care about his citizens and not keeping hold of power he would just surrender to Russia or meet thier demands! Isnt that the quickest way of saving lives! we know putin will not back down! Instead of sending people to their deaths needlessly and keep whats left of ukrainian citys intact just surrender! its delaying the inevitable! Not really that simple though, because little would change. It would just turn into a guerilla warfare situation for many months if not years, because psychologically would people just accept that the brutality that led them there is the right thing, or something that would submit to? Some would, many wouldn't. The war wouldn't end. Also, it would send out a disastrous message, because if its made that easy, it's naive to imagine that Putin will simply stop there.

Wisbech, I think we can see how this will play out. Russia won't want to lose. It will do anything to win, outright.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

This sounds about right to me. An issue could come about though as you say, if one NATO country did get involved as others would then get pulled into it. My hope is that a peace agreement can be agreed upon, but in part that depends on whats happening on the ground and how effective the resistance is. A children hospital was bombed today. Let's say Putin's frustration ends up with him carpet bombing large civilian areas in a bid to extinguish resistance. There comes a point where the odds of a neighbouring country or countries getting involved increases dramatically regardless of where this then leads. Worrying times.

It is really not a life you would choose to live, unless your only other choice was North Korea or Yemen. I'm not going to defend Russia but it's also notable that Ukraine was and is considered one of the most corrupt countries in the world....certainly in Europe even beating Russia....which is both European and Asian. Why is the Ukraine so corrupt? Why indeed.

Quote Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba will meet in Turkey on Thursday, Russia's Foreign Ministry confirmed on Wednesday.
This will represent the first meeting between the two leaders since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, the BBC reported. The meeting was proposed by Turkey's Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, who had proposed holding it in a trilateral format with him, Kuleba and Lavrov at the table. It has been reported that the meeting will take place on Thursday, while the diplomatic forum is scheduled to take place on Friday. Edited by BlueJay (09 Mar 2022 5.31pm)

The truth is always somewhere in the middle. Still, it doesn't matter what anyone lied about when your house is blown up.
