For which he deserves credit. if I remember correctly wasn't he heckled by the Liverpool fans a few years ago? And is held in high esteem by them now. Funny how a city where the currant bun is frowned upon is staunch labour.

It's incredible how the Labour left take a pride in being unelectable.
There is a shocking lack of accountability for the actions of our politicians, left and right. Most people on this thread probably have no idea what burnham has ever done as a politician, but are content to laud him as a good one.

The harsh reality is that currently living standards are dropping, the NHS is on its knees, schools are massively struggling, we have a PM who says people use food banks for 'a number of complicated reasons' (yeah good one) and child poverty is rising. Yet, here we are on the brink of giving the tories a landslide victory. We are quick to laugh at the USA voting for Trump but from where I'm looking, it seems the UK is just as bad at making bizarre decisions at the polling stations. Not saying a Labour win would be great, but certainly a Tory landslide is bad news for the majority of hard working families in this country who quite frankly, the likes of Ian Duncan Smith and Philip Hammond treat with contempt.

So, the result is that the Tories have swept up Labour and UKIP votes, are now the second party in Scotland and the Lib Dems are not receiving the 'Bremoaner' benefit of sweeping up the votes of the so-called 48%. This is great and allows the job of executing a clean Brexit easier for Mrs May, as long as she pursues a clean Brexit and not a half arsed and impossible 'soft Brexit', so beloved of elder statesmen like Tony Blair and Nick Clegg. As an aside, it's very interesting to note that the reaction to the election result from Brussels was for Jean-Clause Druncker to use petty jibes, saying that English was no longer the language of the EU. They are nervous because the country is galvanising behind a common purpose. Let's get the GE out of the way, detach ourselves from the Socialist Republic of Greater Germany and reengage with the World.

Jonathan Freedland is pretty cutting about Jezza and McLoony: Love the line "what radical programme have these great revolutionaries pledged to the nation? Four extra bank holidays".

No. To me it's incredible that people think that the main political aim of someone involved in politics is getting elected. Power is often a terrible thing. People with political strength have never necessarily been the best representatives of who they represent. Being a good politician is about what you do once you're elected. There is a shocking lack of accountability for the actions of our politicians, left and right. Most people on this thread probably have no idea what burnham has ever done as a politician, but are content to laud him as a good one. So what is Labour's purpose and future then? Like the Liberal Party after World War I? A few MPs pandering to minority extremist views? A perpetual protest group using extra-parliamentary means? Our politicians are accountable to Parliament and ultimately, the electorate. I agree that this accountability has been diluted by the existence of regional 'parliaments' and the non-democratic EU - but at least we are freeing ourselves from the latter. Edited by hedgehog50 (06 May 2017 9.18am) All the current left-wing comrades at the top will need to be replaced with moderates and then maybe Labour will be able to make some progress. Traditional Labour supporters (Not the hard-left) must be in total despair regarding the sorry state of the party they once supported with gusto. There are times when the Conservative party haven't been in the 'Best of health' but my goodness we didn't sink to such depths.

Tenuous at best, if Labour ever lost Liverpool then they would be extinct as a party. Maybe it is because the Tory working class media machine and the Sun's successful influence at all elections doesn't get a look in on Merseyside. Some people think about politics for 4 minutes a week and never watch or listen to any politicians talk on TV. They cannot be influenced by the Sun front page then.

That's where Lord Rothermere and the now-ubiquitous Metro rag come in. Get 'em on the way to work. Oh you're talking about Liverpool.......
