I'd of settled for the point beforehand therefore saw it very much as gained post match. We had our entire midfield missing plus are without (arguably) our most talented attacker in Olise, and best prospect in Franca.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

I did not leave the ground disappointed that we only attained a point given our injury woes. Apropos Franca he is indeed just a "Prospect. He was not a regular at Flamengo and most of his appearances were from the bench. He is a young chap, not familiar with the PL and resident in a new country accordingly one cannot assume he will be an instant success.

Funny enough, Selhurst was not its usual ‘bouncy’ self on Saturday. We always have a player that when gets the ball everyone gets excited about what he is going to do next. This was clearly missing on Saturday - though a few times when Jes had the ball the crowd reacted.

One in particular when after a nice bit of ball control he chopped it back and sat the defender down. It was a tremendous piece of skill.

Away from frivolity, I suspect the 'Mood music' amongst supporters before the game was not of heightened positivity and our performance in general was not one to cause frissons of excitement. I think Jes has the ability, he just severely lacks confidence which I'd think it extremely harsh to put him down for, he's a young lad breaking into the PL for the first time. My hope is that we do blood him well and with a bit more confidence gained we'll see the finished article at some point. May just be me but the sense I got of him was that he is currently stifled by the necessity and inclination to just 'not f**k up' which is prominent at the top level now (look at the boring Arsenal vs City game yesterday). I perhaps optimistically like to imagine with a loosening of inhibition and risk aversion, we may see the full potential of what he has to offer as a winger and attacking player. Either way, he should have our full support until then.

Its easy to say it from the side-lines, but considering we have such a solid and well drilled team, I'd love to give him more freedom. Looking at the match on Sat, it was clear that he was the most likely to pick the lock. He probably only really had 3/4 chances to take the full back on. Tactically I'd be asking the team to find him as many times as possible.

Being brought on early in a televised game can't have been easy so fair play to him on a good showing.

I did notice that forest doubled up on Rak Saki when he came on. he will do well when we get another attacking player back playing the other side.

I'd be worried if I was Forest after Saturday - they've played essentially a Palace reserve/Carabao Cup side and in the second half in particular were under pressure for long periods. There won't be many worse 11s they come up against this season. Very good point in the context of a shocking injury list. Guehi and Andersen in particular really stepped up and took a lot of responsibility in that performance. Clear that some in that squad are carrying small injuries too, Edouard being one. Delighted that we've now got a week off. Just getting Lerma and Doucoure back will make a huge difference to the team's ability to play higher up the field.

All in all, a good performance everything considered. I'm not sure any manager around can do what Roy does. Its isn't pretty, but they make it very difficult for teams to play against. ITs certainly not progressive but I'm glad we have him to navigate us at the moment. The positives are that we've got a really solid defensive unit. and tactically everyone knows what to do. Add Olise, Eze and the future balon dor winner Franca into the mix and that looks like a very good team. And a much more healthy squad. It's funny how many supporters felt the performance was good. Personally, i'm delighted with the point, but let's be honest we rode our luck at times and only really had 1 real chance in the whole 90 minutes. Yes, we had injuries, but some of these have been out all season (Olise etc) and from the team that won at Man U there were only 2 real changes (Eze and Doucoure) as surely Ward for clyne is a like for like. Whilst i blame the board for the lack of investment in attacking positions and Roy's line up and game plan was pragmatic seeing my team running down the clock for most of the game was quite disappointing IMHO.

I've only managed to catch the forest-centric MOTD highlights so Far on this game, but suffice to say when I saw Doucoure out as well as Lerma; and saw a midfield of Hughes, Jairo and Schlupp, I thought we we're gonna have a bad day.
