Though I like watching the rugby I haven't got a clue about some of the calls the refs make . Surely the players know not to give away penalty's in crucial areas of the pitch but they always do . Maybe thats why the rugby refs are untouchable ,players rarely argue with decisions as they probably haven't got anymore idea of whats going on as me

With football you can get from one end of the pitch quite quickly and regularly in a position to score, with rugby going through phases takes a lot longer to get into the opposition 22, A team is behind in rugby with 10 minutes left they kick upfeild to touch and get a line out with them throwing in and they stroll up

if footballers exerted the same amount of energy / effort during tackling, scrums & line outs as Rugby players do I would suggest that they would walk a bit more too. Originally posted by nickyf

Maybe thats why the rugby refs are untouchable ,players rarely argue with decisions as they probably haven't got anymore idea of whats going on as me The problem is that some errors are forced, preventing the ball carrier from getting to ground, making the tackled player hold onto the ball by aggressive rucking, forcing an error in the scrum, etc, although the last one can be open to interpretation.

I can't work out what those penalties are for, it's really all about the ref how he is feeling at any given moment.

There's no doubt that there are differences in the ways individual referees interpret the laws, but I think each referee is pretty consistent in his own interpretation. After Wales lost to Argentina, Warren Gatland said that the change of referee (because of injury) had been a problem for them. His players and coaches had watched videos of the original ref to acquaint themselves with how they needed to play to stay on his side (in other words, to find out what they could and couldn't get away with). I imagine all the top sides do the same, and in a sport where there's such scope for differing interpretations of the laws, that makes sense.) Pity that Farrell seems to have no interest in keeping the ref on side. I can't remember another occasion when the captain of a side in the World Cup got marched back 10m for speaking out of turn. It resulted in an in-range penalty.

I do know they don't give penalties for handball, and it's not just women who don't understand the offside rule in rugby, it's not gender specific.

So, World Rugby has decided to take no action against Bongi Mbonambi who allegedly called Tom Curry a white c*** during the semi final last weekend. And nobody makes a fuss. I can't help wondering what outrage would have been expressed by all and sundry if the name calling had been reversed.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |
