I can't help but suspect....that this is largely the female vote, and men who think like women voting majority left again. Men no doubt would have voted majority right. Masculine men put order before empathy. If the projections are correct what they have voted for is a mess. Edited by Stirlingsays (07 Jul 2024 11.32pm)

The collusion between Macron, socialists and the far left in France may result in quite dire consequences for the country. Apparently 200 candidates were withdrawn to maximise an anti Le Pen vote....Ganging up on one party. Gaming the system against how PR is meant to work. Le Pen can only conclude that she isn't allowed to win fairly and the left celebrate today but I suspect a price will be paid. In 2027 she can't point to this dishonesty and I suspect a lot of the public will feel that this was a dishonorable tactic and created significant instability. It’s evidence of people’s willingness to cooperate and compromise for what they believe is the common good. Putting differences aside to defeat an enemy is what we do if we need to. Le Pen didn’t win. To suggest it wasn’t “fair”, which it has been, is nonsense. She lost because the majority decided they didn’t want her party in power. Deciding to tactically withdraw candidates is not new. I seem to recall a guy called Farage doing something similar here not so many years ago. To suggest this was all the fault of women and that “macho” men would not have voted this way sent a shiver down my spine. I thought the idea that women could not be trusted to vote was finally buried 96 years ago! Apparently not.

No, it's quite clearly a political stitch-up but, as you say, that's nothing new particularly in France. I now find it amusing that France, without PR, has ended up with a PR-esque outcome which is immediately being portrayed as a big problem for the country. And there was I thinking that PR was supposed to produce parliamentary utopia with everyone putting aside their political differences to work for the common good. Dream on!

If there is a stalemate, with nobody willing to budge on their position, can Macron call another election under their constitution? I'm pretty sure that Macron doesn't want either the far left (who got the biggest vote as a coalition), or the far right (who are the biggest single party) heading the show, so what are the options?
hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing. |

I rarely feel violent as an older guy in my fifties. However, if I were younger this would be a red mist for me.

As are your responses. You can regard it as a stitch-up if you wish, but obviously the majority in France don’t because that’s what they voted for. Does PR produce utopia? More probably it produces compromises that can be tolerated. I don’t think political differences are put aside. They are negotiated and common ground sought which enables progress to be achieved, whilst avoiding outcomes that those involved do not want to see. That the negotiations can be difficult is true, as is that they produce instability and can fail. If the overriding desire is to avoid something else then that’s the cost you must pay.

Apparently not for another year. There would have to be an ad hoc minority government, or series of them. Which ought to be sufficient motivation to ensure agreement is reached.

They will not be able to agree on forming a government. The government that does get formed will be unworkable. There will not be agreement on the President.

Most definitely a stitch up as this tweet illustrates. Unethical collusion to frustrate the natural result.
