The fuss over a VAT refund for rich tourists is being led by all the high end retailers and you appear to support them. Personally I don't see why a foreigner should get a tax break that is not available to UK citizens.

The economic argument is that these high end shoppers also spend in hotels, restaurants etc etc whilst in the UK. If I order goods online from the UK to be delivered to Hong Kong often they are VAT exempt. The point is the goods are exported hence the scheme, it's not for specifically " foreigners " but for non residents. Edited by HKOwen (06 May 2023 8.35am)
Responsibility Deficit Disorder is a medical condition. Symptoms include inability to be corrected when wrong, false sense of superiority, desire to share personal info no else cares about, general hubris. It's a medical issue rather than pure arrogance. |

I'm just not convinced that somebody decides to holiday in Paris instead of London for that reason. Edited by Badger11 (06 May 2023 8.36am)

The wife has lots of Arab friends & their extended families from our time overseas, when they visit London their trip wouldn't be complete without at least a day in High Street Kensington & a day long visit to either Bicester or Ashford outlet malls, they like the prices & the choice (all of the colours in all of the sizes) they do also spend quite a lot on hotels, eating out, taxis etc- I think everyone likes to think that they are getting a freebie so whilst the VAT refund isn't a major factor its certainly a contributor to the decision, for sure Paris has sightseeing & shops too so in the grand scheme of things it the VAT refund was stopped it wouldn't be so hard for some of these visitors to make a decision to go to Paris once in a while or Amsterdam or Munich instead of London every year. Valid points but it's a bad tax break because it only really benefits the high end stores. I doubt Primark get much benefit from it. These luxury good sellers are whining because they have had it easy in the past flog an overpriced watch or handbag and "Oh sir don't forget the 20% rebate" There is an alternative maybe they could drop their prices which would benefit UK shoppers as well. C'mon lefties back me up you know I'm right Edited by Badger11 (06 May 2023 9.50am)

Given the length of the refund queue at the airport some days your absolutely right if the Primark receipt was the only one that you had then you probably wouldn't bother - Originally posted by Badger11
