And to be fair to the EU, which I loathe doing, 'Ode to Joy' is a superb anthem. Going to nick that.

I harbour no illusions that as visions go, it may well seem unachievable but you gotta have a dream! Europa Ut! And to be fair to the EU, which I loathe doing, 'Ode to Joy' is a superb anthem. Going to nick that. To be fair to you you're talking at least 30 years hence. I think where I differ is that I prefer Hrolf's English autonomy......but I agree with the idea that essentially the boomers killed that by trusting our leaders back in the late sixties. Individually Europeans are being turned into minorities in their own homelands and an eventual redoubt is probably the only answer. It's kind of ridiculous, considering how we let this happen to ourselves, but our children will be looking for their own homeland just as the Jews were pre WW2. Obviously though....it's not what I want for the future....I just don't see how it doesn't happen.

Very serious misjudgements on both sides. No doubt about that. History won’t be kind to David Cameron. I have always argued that change is needed, that it better managed inside than out and will eventually arrive. I hold to that view. Modification of the free movement principle is one of those changes. That was a question!

Our post-brexit problems mount up daily, the UK is rushing into a trade agreement with India the price of which is further unrestricted immigration from there. Neither does the UK control its borders as the record intake from France shows. Well one thing guaranteed is they will come and graft and put into the system alongside they won’t read a soppy book and try to kill us.

You questioned in a previous post about the economic damage that has been done - both now and into the future. Look no further than the numerous analyses that have been done by the FT into trade - especially with the EU - which remains our largest mkt by some distance. Equally, its worth considering why UK trade has been much slower to recover post Covid than other similar economies - despite a surge in imports. Maybe leaving the customs union and single mkt might have had something to do with that? Opinions on the pros/cons of free movement vary and there seems little doubt it was a big factor in the referendum result. However, views seem to have shifted somewhat - maybe not on this site - but amongst the wider population given labor shortages, the issues in the channel and so on. In passing, I will leave you to continue to ponder on my status!

Europe is our homeland. This is the point. Even if we have to regroup in the central/eastern parts, the entirety of it has to be the long-term objective. But that requires a vision bigger than just wrapping ourselves in bits of coloured cloth which are no longer relevant. Look at the 'UK'. United Kingdom. How can you have a 'United' anything when the very people running the show are constantly telling us 'diversity is our strength'. Flys in the face of basic logic. You can either be United or you can be Diverse. But you cannot be both. Suspect an English Republic might be one way forward but even then, the diversity BS will still be in play. There has to be a reckoning. Might not happen for decades but it has to come and from that there has to emerge a dominant cultural identity. But the notion of being British or German or French or whatever is a fading concept. Means less and less every day. A shared European identity could be the solution. As I said, I get the pipe dream part but I am trying to think about the bigger picture because our enemies have their vision and we don't feature in it. Edited by Matov (24 Aug 2022 5.04pm)

Clearly the tories must go. Labour must step up and make us international again. The image I have of Johnson is of him isolated looking for anyone to say hello, while the EU countries and the USA President greeted each other like old school friends. So much for 'getting brexit done' he has done a runner like Cameron did, only away from everything else as well. Has he “done a runner” or been hounded out? At least he stayed around unlike piggy Cameron. I don’t think greeting Biden like an old school friend, gives you any credibility
