These threads are amusing . When we win, top ten finish is a certainty in most peoples opinion. When we lose narrowly, players are rubbish a clear out is needed etc The general consensus before kick off was it was a good line up, but it turns out that we lost to a wonder goal, suddenly PV doesn’t know what he is doing.

We have won 8 PL games but 5 of them were against teams who are currently in the top 8 and 3 of them against teams in the current top 5. Edited by Willo (21 Apr 2022 12.49pm)

Full disclosure, I wasn't able to watch the game, but pretty surprised to see the strength of some doom and gloom merchants. Even at their worst, St James' has never been an easy place to go, they're absolutely flying at the moment with something silly like 9 wins in 13 matches. We're coming off playing in a FA Cup Semi at Wembley barely 72 hours before. I don't care what anyone says you'd have to be a robot for it not to have an impact mentally, ignoring the very real physical toll. From what I've seen and read, yes, not a great day out for us, but it's not like we just got humped 5-0 or anything. Bit of perspective needed this week I reckon.

This awful crap about Schlupp needs to stop, he has been magnificent for our club. The same for Ayew. You are entitled to your opinion but I'm interested on what basis you make that statement. 'Magnificent' ? Schlupp has little awareness. Yesterday if he ran with Zaha (instead of Mitchell) he might have helped. But his aimless and hasty passing game was poor. Ayew, works hard but often doesn't know what to do with it and, as for his scoring record as a supposed No.9, least said the better. I guess you think Benteke and Kouyate are 'rather good' ?

Yes! I already made the assumption some time ago that we are a group of manic-depressives here. The only exceptions are some incurable manics and some incurable depressives. A wise poster explained to me that this state of mind is an inevitable consequence of supporting Palace.

This reminds me of an incident perhaps going back to the 70s. I was in the phonebox in the adjacent Public House carpark in a fit of fury about a result, almost certainly beetroot-gilled,blood-pressure raised. The chap on the end of the phone told me that if I was not careful I would end up in the building next door !

I used to frequent this pub by Crown Point and once bumped into Peter Taylor and Dave Swindlehurst there.

Having being diagnosed Bipolar, or 'manice-depressive' as it's sometimes called (previous nomenclature), I can say with assurity and confidence that my apprehension surrounding the current and future state of our beloved club, at any given time, has been the most stable of my emotions throughout my entire life!
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

I too saw Taylor and Swindlehurst in this establishment, also Paul Hammond. Apropos the 'Conquering Hero' I believe being in a different Borough it closed earlier than the 'Rose and Crown' and clientele used to gravitate from the former to the latter.

I think we should as why do we play so much sideways/back/forth stuff. Is it because possession is the priority, even when it's with any end result? Or is our passing so unreliable it's better to take the easy option? Or is it because our forward players lack movement and are rarely available to accept the pass?
I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything. |

That’s a fair enough summary from Newcastle fans from that second half. It really was that final ball and perhaps to slow in the build up allowing Newcastle to get players behind the ball. Don’t like our combinations in midfield. I always feel we don’t play the best midfield players alongside each other and then take of one or two of them bringing on someone like Macca who would benefit still having them on the pitch. The substitutions never seem to make us a better team at present. On Sunday we brought on more forward players leaving one midfield type player on the pitch. And then when I thought Luka was coming on for one of those forwards he took of Kouyate. For me having Gallagher, Kouyate and Macca together or even Hughes or Schlupp gives more balance and these players can get into the box as well as making crucial passes to create chances. All we end up with when we bring to many forwards on is our back four hitting long balls which are easily dealt with. Both Chelsea and Newcastle were there for the taking in the last two matches and we blew it with strange formations and substitutions in my opinion :-( Let’s hope we get back to winning ways next Monday? IMHO Schlupp doesn't suit a 4-3-3 especially with Gallagher at the head of it. If we have Kouyate doing the tackling we need a passer in there and Jeff is not the person. I think we need Macca or Hughes starting. In a 442, especially away from home, Jeff on the left and even Ayew on the right makes some sense.
