It's funny, because when I heard Newcastle were paying £25m for a 30 y.o. one goal striker, I immediately thought Benteke compared pretty favourably. And then this story crops up. His contract runs until next Summer. Presumably Burnley would have to offer him a contract until at least June 2023 to make it worthwhile. But if they're willing to pay cash for him then 2.5 years is presumably the least they'd offer. A signing on fee and guaranteed employment until the age of 33 would surely be something he would at least consider. He won't get that with us. But we've asked for £12m and I suspect they probably expected about £5m and a taxi to Turf Moor.

If he was in the slightest ambitious he would seriously consider moving. He is not now a guaranteed starter at Palace but he would be at Burnley - a sort of big fish in a small pond and likely to get better service from the wings especially if Lennon plays. But here is the rub: He seems now to be content to be a bit player and with Lukaku first choice for Belgium hasn't much incentive to impress Martinez - this is beginning to show in his performances. He looks slow compared to Edouard or even Mateta. Let's face it he has not been exactly prolific since leaving Liverpool so now is the time to let him go.

Would you want to live in Burnley?

No and neither will CB. Think he’s got business interests in London and Belgium. At his age they will increasingly be his priority. A bit random but has he got his licence back?

Not wanting to move to the club at the bottom of the league has nothing to do with a lack of ambition. He's said it himself, his family are settled in London and he's happy at Palace. The fact that you and others want rid of him is neither here nor there if he doesn't want to go.

Don't really see the point of this personally. The club barely wants to keep Mateta on loan let alone sign him which would leave us with just Edouard in the summer and needing to spend a load of money on a couple of strikers when really that money needs to go on central midfield and a right back. If the solution is Nketiah, he looked dreadful against Forest, hasn't done it in the Premier League, leaves us looking lightweight up top and if it were to happen in January, Arsenal still want too much money. This is all redundant anyway because Benteke is not going to sign a contract with Burnley. a) he doesn't want to live there He isn't going anywhere. Spoilsport

Interestingly, Kieran Trippier has just been called unambitious for agreeing to be top earner and guaranteed to start at a club at the bottom of the league now he isn't first choice for his country. There aren't many PL strikers who are guaranteed starters these days. None of ours are. Firmino, Cavani, Lukaku, Jesus, Iheanacho, Ings, Lacazette... To be one, you need to be absolutely world class (Ronaldo), playing above your station (Dennis, Richarlison), or have no competition (Antonio, Kane, Jimenez, Wood). I'd argue that moving to a club that has scored twice in the 5 league games since they played us so you can be playing Millwall next year is pretty unambitious. I also reckon half the squad would be fuming if you said to them that a 34 year old Aaron Lennon whose last Premier League assist was in September 2018 has better service than them. I wouldn't have thought teams like Antwerp or Bruges would meet his salary level at Palace (whatever that is now). My understanding is that he would like to end his career in Belgium (just as PVA expressed an interest in returning to Holland one day). From his point of view he may well prefer to continue to draw his Palace salary as long as possible and only then return to Belgium. He will continue to get game time with us even if not as a regular starter. If the player doesn't fancy moving to Burnley (I certainly wouldn't want to) then I think that's likely to be the end of it.

His ambition is to stay in the cozy comfort zone he has made for himself at Palace. Where else would a £30m signing on huge wages get away with the statistics he has acheived here?
