But Ayew didn't score, as he hasn't supposedly in around the last 30 odd games.
To apply this logic you might as well say Ayew cost us 2 points v Brighton as we would have beaten them if Ayew had taken his chance. It's futile to refer to what might have been.
Furthermore, we were not unlucky v Villa and deserved to lose against an average side on the day.
It's perfectly legitimate to question our recent performances rather than look for weak excuses and be told to 'get a grip.'
It is after all a game of opinions and being a supporter doesn't mean not being able to question recent performances or Ayew's goalscoring record.

A certain manager had come in against us with Villa as the same today and it creates a lift as you know and I wouldn't ever class Villa as average.
Our position in the table is one I didn't expect, I really thought we'd be struggling this season to keep out of the bottom three and have been pleasantly surprised with the players we now have and the football which is being implemented, to say the things many fans have been saying is quite freighting when considering everything that's happened so far, yes our last three defeats looks bad but they could've quite easily have been three draws so I'm not too bothered especially when also considering we could've easily prevented two of those losses with a little more competence and concentration which can also be fixed in our new training facilities ..another thing I wasn't expecting.

Kouyaté. I love him, and he loves Palace. But he is playing Royball. Can PV teach him to turn with the ball and look to play it forwards? If not, he has to go too.

He shouldn't be played in the middle, he should be played at the back.

Really? When our new philosophy is about playing out from the back? God no...

Kouyate should be used to harass and tackle against the good teams. Every other game he should be on the bench. I like him and his energy...but he's not great at football.

The important thing is that Vieira recognised the failings against both Villa and today and did not seek to make excuses about facing new manager bounce.
From the press conference today he said,
- we weren’t brave enough on the ball
- we didn’t play between the lines to give them problems
- there were too many long balls
- our forwards didn’t hold the ball up well enough.
He thought we did quite well defensively but not offensively.
This gives the impression that the team didn’t play as instructed and I’ve no doubt changes will be made if this pattern continues.
And this is at should be - no favourites.
We have the squad now to make changes.
He also said he had planned to give Hughes some time today, but when we went a goal behind he put on more attacking players instead.

its a pity Ayew missed, but i have run out of patience with both him and Benteke.

I thought Wilf was worse.

There is no set up where any player is useful if his passing is below the standard required, he had a bad day at the office highlighted by the standards of the opposition ..which also highlights the reason why he plays for us.

Benteke and Ayew are easy targets sadly.

Perhaps Vieira saw the game differently to you.
He made no mention of United preventing us from playing.
He was clearly unhappy with our use of the ball and our offensive display on the day.
He was also critical of the Villa performance.
Personally I find it refreshing that he doesn't seek to pull the wool over people's eyes and offers constructive criticism when warranted.

Nah, not for me. Kouyate at CB in our new system would scare the crap out of me. Would prefer Jairo.

Absolutely. Benteke got very little service. Ayew worked his socks off and won us lots of fouls: he was the only one relieving some of the pressure on us in the first half.

Kouyate also did what it says on the tin: worked really hard, defended well, made lots of tackles and covered the back four. He's not in there for his slick passing.

Yet players like Schlupp who I don't think touched the ball in the first half and remained anonymous in the second, and seem to fulfil no discernible role, don't get much of a mention. Gallagher was terrible today by his own standards, and even chickened out of a couple of challenges where he looked favourite to win the ball, but without someone else in midfield to share the load and give him a passing option, he has some excuse.

We really miss Anderson. Makes playing out from the back very difficult. McArthur is also a big miss. Ayew is essential when we are defending against much better sides like United. The big test will be when we have players away for Africa nations cup soon (zaha, schlupp, ayew? Kouyate). But good news is that will be an opp for olise Eze and others to start 🥳

Seeing those leaving for Africa Cup (bar WZ), I wished it started today and lasted till the end of January (at least).
