Corruption is a serious problem, and anticorruption efforts have been weakened by politicized enforcement. Due process guarantees are poorly upheld and security forces carry out a range of human right abuses with near impunity. Romania has much higher educational standards. It is serious competition for all European countries and should not be confused with Least Developed Countries. Educationally it isn't too bad....however I actually know a little about Romania as Vee, a former Romanian Doctor, who is now a YT commentator regularly vlogs from there.....and I'm afraid that country is most definitely not doing well in most metrics.....perhaps you should start watching his analysis about the country. On the topic of Romania That's 900,000. Remember when Mr Farage was declared a scaremongerer by the BBC and LBC etc for suggesting in 2014 250,000 Romanians might wish to come to the UK. Thank goodness we have plenty infrastructure and services to support such influxes in they occur

Edited by Stirlingsays (04 Jul 2021 10.23pm) I am fully aware of the situation in Romania, as you know. My post was in response to a fatuous post suggesting it is like Bangladesh. I did not say it is doing well but did say it would be foolish to underestimate it. It has also changed beyond recognition since I first worked there in 1994.

I see one asking if Bangladesh working conditions are acceptable.

I’m not sure I really know the answer to this or whether I am right but it does rather occur to me that the reason we cannot get English workers to do lower skilled jobs is because of free movement.

I'd genuinely like to know how many are in full employment (with appropriate Covid calibration) and how many are on benefits (ditto). If they are any thing like the Poles I know, work all the hours and pay their tax in full. Not a bean sent back to Old Poland and not a penny sponged in benefits.

The problem is that the amount people pay in tax is peanuts to what you can claim in benefits: Working tax credit That's why it's the government has now set a wage threshold below which you will not get a visa unless it is a specified role. Edited by Badger11 (05 Jul 2021 10.04am)

I agree, accurate data would be helpful to allay a lot of incorrect assumptions. Originally posted by silvertop

While I agree with you that eastern Europeans are probably a small net benefit to northern European economies the reality persists that this nation does not exist to serve the Poles or other EE.....or indeed the preference for the better off to have cheaper labour.

I think the answer is simpler than this. There are a load of lazy b'stards in this country who would rather do nothing than earn minimum wage.
