Eze had a groin injury last week and had only trained once.

Bats had just returned from international duty and then spent the rest of his week negotiating a contract extension and a loan move to a new club.

You’ve got to think how it would look to current players like Schlupp if an unfit Eze starts ahead of him.

Yep. Both were on the bench, so could be called upon if required. Eze got a useful 10 min cameo, and had we needed a goal then I'm sure RH would have brought Batshuayi on. Also both got to see how the team shaped up in a real (PL) match and not some pre-season friendly.
I expect Eze and Bats will get a good chunk of game time tonight so as to be better placed to start against Manure.

Yes, but Traore has them in a top league where they're worth at least 50% more.

And for example, Denis Bouanga of Saint Etienne has more goals and assists than benrahma and has them in a top league and costs between 10 an 15 million.

And what would be the cultural difference between France and England besides the language for him not to adapt? Come to think of it, benrahma is also a main French talker and he came in just fine. Seems to be the case with everyone coming to Brentford: Maupay, more rently Mbeumo, all doing great.

About Newcastle..I don't know if the French were their problem. More like their lack of patience. Thauvin is a world class player. If he wasn't given patience at Newcastle when he was 22-23 it's really not his fault.

Sorry, my misunderstanding, I thought you were saying Ligue 1 players were cheaper than top Championship players. Did you mean Ligue 2? Foreign players are known to get home sick wherever they come from, be it France, Spain or even the PL or Championship, so I agree that unless you sign an English player that is always a risk. Anyway, given how long Palace seem to scout players for these days they are obviously pretty confident of who they are signing and there are no signs of last-minute desperation signings, which is good.

It could be that Brenford have created a better environment for foreign players to integrate into?
or simply that Brentford, being a borough of London, may be easier culturally to integrate into than somewhere like Newcastle.

British people have difficulty adjusting to regions of the country that are culturally different. The North/South divide is not just a financial one.

For sure Champiosnhip players are more expensive than Ligue 2 players, though, honestly, the difference is not that big between the leagues. yes, Championship is a bit better and has more quality players, but not by much. Brentford got Mbeumo from Ligue 2 for just 5 million at around 21 years old and I thought he had done more to warrant that money than Eberechi, who we paid 17 million for at 22 (soon to be 23).

And recently, Championship players have become more expensive than even Ligue 1 players, Yes, I do think Benrahma costs more than Traore, though one played in the Champions League and top French division and Benrahma has only 2nd league experience. I think Traore costs around 15 million and Benrahma costs 20+ So yeah, Championship prices are crazy. i woldn't buy from the Championship. That is not that I don't appreciate Benrahma. But I don't think a player from another Europe top league (Rashica or Bouanga) will find it harder to adapt culturally than an Algerian from England's league 2.

I think we’ll start looking elsewhere if they are insisting on £25m. There’s no way we will pay that. Maybe we should offer them Benteke and Wickham plus £10m!

That’s always been the crazy football market though hasn’t it.

English players cost a premium
English based players cost a premium
Foreign players can be bought cheap

Like another poster mentioned there must surely be a reason why clubs still accept it.

Chelsea have always tended to be quite clever in the transfer market...but is Chilwell (who I think is awesome btw) the best value? Perhaps not. But it must have been agreed that he was 99% guaranteed to be the right player for them and you’d have to think that comes from the fact that he’s playing in the Prem and also isn’t likely to want to go back to France/Spain/Germany anytime soon. It’s a long term investment and if he signs another deal at the end of his contract it’s halved the transfer fee in a way...if u get what I mean.

Sure, hudsoneagle, I get what you mean. But Chelsea didn't just transfer Chilwell, they also transferred Havertz, Werner, Zyiech, Thiago Silva, Malang Sarr, none of which came from the PL

That's just 1 out of 6 transfers this summer who came from England (16%).

Now look at Palace. Ferguson- home based. Eberechi- home based. Batshuayi- playing in England. Now looking at Benrahma- playig in England. Last year: McCarthy, Ayew, Cahill, Tosun- playing in England.

Well, there's a reason why in 10 years a club doesn't grow. Look at Leicester. Where were they 10 years ago and where are they now? Where did their players come from? Mahrez- France's Ligue 2, Tielemans from Monaco, Praet from Sampdoria, Ricardo pereira from Porto, Soyuncu from Freiburg, Ndidi from Genk, Kante from Caen, Castagne from Atalanta.

And they have plenty of English yongsters too.

A club has to expand the selection area. Otherwise it will be a local club. They need people to watch and evaluate players fro a 7 billion population world, not a 40 million country.

You are right, there is also the language barrier!

Yes you are correct to a certain point Matteo what you are forgetting is that Leicester are owned by very wealthy owners who I would guess have money that the entire Palace owners put together. The Srivaddhanaprabha family owners have the money to pay for these players you mentioned. You also have to take into account leicester have a more modern stadium. Palace have a lot of catching up to do in the stadium department this is our down fall bigher crowds will, lead to bigger finances, then we could complete with the likes of Leicester. In the mean time we have to look at the market we are looking at at present.

Your point is well made as far as Leicester and Chelsea's recent business is concerned. However, you have omitted to state that we have brought players in from other leagues. Unfortunately, it has been with mixed fortunes.

Guaita = success
Jach = disappointing so far
Meyer = also disappointing so far considering how he was touted when he came and his current wage
Riederwald = beginning to show he has something and will probably become one of our regular CDMs
Mandanda = disappointing and shipped out again
Sorloth = ? I won't fan the exiistng flames on this one, other than to say he didn't take the limited opportunities he was given.

We can, of course, go back in time, but I wanted to choose more recent signings to show that we haven't simply been recruiting from the British leagues, as your post seems to suggest.

Edit
Oh and, of course, I forgot Luka! Sorry Luka.

It depends on what the club wants though. Take Sheffield United and Burnley for example, they have mostly found success with hardworking British players with a few hardworking Nordic players thrown in. Meanwhile, Wolves have decided to become a Portuguese team. In recent years we've relied on experienced pros who we have bought cheap and who know what it takes to compete in the PL. By all accounts, a lot of people are saying that Eze is the real deal and if he is his price will go higher than a similar foreign player by virtue of him being homegrown. If AWB had been foreign there's no way United would have paid 50m for him. Obviously Benrahma is not English though! (BTW he did play in Ligue 1 with Nice and Angers (loan) scoring 4 times and with 2 assists across 600 minutes of football)
