Yeah, I think this is right. Centrism offers nothing when it comes nationalism and culture wars. And if the Tories continue to use nationalism as a Trojan Horse with which to smuggle in and further their economic agenda, then Starmer's going to struggle. This idea, though, of a battle between democratic and authoritarian systems - how democratic are we? Every 5 years we get a choice between basically two parties. I mean, if you went to a restaurant and there were only two dishes on the menu, you'd walk out. But when it comes to how we're governed and how we live, that's all we get. And often they're not really that different. Healthy democracies, in which the people do genuinely feel empowered, wouldn't lead to the gilets jaunes movement in France or the current uprisings in the US or the consistently low voter turnouts in this country. This country isn't ruled by the people. It's ruled by the establishment. An oligarchy dressed up as a democracy. And the other way is?

And the other way is? It's a good question. And it's important we don't shy away from highlighting difficult problems just because there might not be easy answers. The belief that there are no alternatives is a kind of servitude. It's the establishment winning.

This country isn't ruled by the people. It's ruled by the establishment. An oligarchy dressed up as a democracy. An incisive post. Even the lockdown has kind of shown us all just how willing many of the current population has been to live under a more authoritarian system.. The willingness to 'spy and tell' on neighbours and brown nose to the authorities. Like Cryrst says, what's the alternative? Personally, I think British society in general is heading more towards the Scandinavian models, whether that's appropriate, for a country with this population size we will find out. Economic meltdown would change that of course but while I think we are going to suffer economic consequences from this pandemic I don't see a meltdown here because our institutions are stable (for another twenty/thirty years anyway). The EU on the other hand is under huge strain.....When that Italian debt mountain comes calling it's going to be Greece 2.0.....and it'll be curious how they can handle that. I think the safe investment money will always run to the 'five eyes' economies and those stable Asian countries outside China. Edited by Stirlingsays (02 Jun 2020 9.19am)

So Cummings Parents spare cottage on their farm, was all just an illusion, or a breach of Planning. It's almost like The Press have given up exposing Cummings web of lies, because he's already been massively revealed as a liar. Cummings obviously has a shield of steel. With Cv-19 on a knife-edge, it might be BJ who goes first, but that won't be soon.
