We have some of the most beautiful countryside in the world and everybody should feel free to enjoy it. Why they don't venture out into it I guess is the question? Maybe they believe they will not be welcomed? I wonder if it is more about perception than reality.

I have a black friend who loves horse racing but had never actually been unlike me and my mates. We finally persuaded him to come to Ascot with us. I am not sure what he thought would happen, "Good God a black man at Ascot"? Anyway after his first win he relaxed and had a great day I hope his perception of being ill treated has now disappeared.

When my wife was on holiday in Sri Lanka a few years ago (she is fair-skinned, naturally blonde) whilst on a packed bus the local women were fascinated by her, stroking her hair and touching her skin. This is how curiosity of 'the other' often manifests itself all over the world, but not normally in the Western countries.
