‘Lampooning privilege.’ Danny Baker said this in his statement, but I get the feeling, after seeing several posts online, that nearly all of the outraged haven’t read his statement, and never do. It’s straight into full attack. I prefer to consider all possibilities, which is why I went from. 1. ‘I can’t believe he’s tweeted that.’ To 2. This is too obviously racist. He must’ve done it for a reason knowing this. Exiting his contract is possible. To 3. No that’s a bit unlikely seeing how mental it’s gone. His statements and comments on camera sound very genuine, and why would someone tweet this if they intended it to be with the racist connotation? Again, career and reputation suicide. I very much agree with your take on his tweet, but he's caught in a political pincer movement now. On the left, those who can't wait to 'cancel' someone and put the boot in leaving a career in tatters before moving on to the next victim. They don't about the why's, or hows, just the opportunity. On the other end of the spectrum, those annoyed that he's apologising for what they see as a naughty racial joke that he should've stood by come what may. Almost with an air of disappointment at the idea that he may not have meant it, or disbelief that not everyone is wired to immediately go for the racial angle. It creates a setting where very few people are defending him as result. Still, there are more ways he get your voice out there now, so I think his audience will hear from him again at some point. He's obviously not some kind of self destruct button racist, and I think that matters here. Just as it matter if someone is. It was in incredibly foolish situation to get into, but at the same time I hasn't really coloured my view of him in either direction.

Plenty of people have defended him. The simple fact is that he was very foolish not to realise the potential interpretation of the joke and then compounded the mistake by groveling embarrassingly to the snowflake meltdown brigade. The only apology he should have made was to the couple concerned for making a crass joke about their child of whom I'm sure they are very proud.

Ah those twitter moral outrage guardians, usually fine examples of scum from cum. Edited by Stirlingsays (11 May 2019 4.46pm)
