my theory about the Good Friday Agreement.

the main movers & shakers in N.I. had seen the ethnic War in the Balkans and thought....no thanks. We cannot win outright, lets negotiate with the other side.

I think there is merit to this. At the start of the troubles both sides wanted to win and had no interest in negotiation.

As the decades went by and the body count increased I think all sides came to realise that surrender of the other side was not realistic and that peace could only come with compromise.

I don't believe the IRA surrendered I think they came to realise that the ballot and the bomb strategy wasn't working and that politics and demographics would allow them to achieve their goal.

That"s it in a nutshell Badger, and with sinn fein doing so well in the polls, it might be proven a great judgement call.

If the British had just not gone to NI to protect the catholics perhaps Sinn Fein/IRA would have been pushed out of NI.

I doubt that stirling, dont forget the war of independence in 1916- although from my holidays in the West as a kid I can say Ireland was a very conservative country- run by the church- and the two main parties are still conservative, sinn fein might be a breat of fresh air to break up the two party state.

Well, it doesn't look like going in did the British any good.

Ireland very conservative?....yeah right. You are talking about previous generations.

No, that was Dublin and the abortion vote, a bit like going to a pride march in London and saying everyone in England is gay!If you leave the cities, and go down the west of the country, you will find that its still a very conservative place, even my family there are, much to my disdain! And thats not just the old folk, even my cousins are quite conservative, thank god someone in my family kept my old grandads rebel spirit!

the Shinners are now Feminist, BLM, LGBT, Pro abortion, refugees welcome here, Palestine & Mosques ........ like Sadiq Khan with bagpipes.

Extending the hand of friendship to every ethnicity except for one : Their immediate neighbours, the Prod 50% of the NI population. The white British hetero types.

Nothing very Catholic about this Catholic party. And not very good at compromises with former enemies.

Of course you could levy a similar criticism of the bully-boys who march up and down with military sunglasses & commemorate a battle won in 1690. Not very good at compromises....and now lost the demographic edge through lack of fertility & immigration of Catholic Poles.

I thought this thread was about today!

Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled.

It is isn"t it? Count yourself lucky, I was reading a thread the other day and was pleased to see Kermit was back on here, only to see we were still in the championship and it was 2011!
