The first post on this thread, back in January, says this:

"I like James McCarthy and think he is a good player, but he's been out for a while and surely he would leave Everton to seek regular playing time so why come when we have Luka, Jimmy, Max and Kouyate already there?"

so presumably the only reason is if we think Luka is off after this season, Jimmy is almost past it and we need some cover plus first choice from 2020 onwards?

Is it strategic? - clever? - preparing for the championship?

What?

Need the striker and right back still ...

Great to get more cover, and options, Camarasa, is a bit different, should make for a bit more variation. If we play a little differently may even limit the need for another ,so called striker.
Trying not to whinge. But where are the couple of fullbacks we need ? Just one for the right side might do.

Gotta love our scouting technique

Cahill. Recommended by Loftus-Cheek
McCarthy. Recommended by McArthur
Camarasa. Recommended by Warnock

I dont see the point of this transfer. 8 million on a player who will not improve the team, will be the 5th choice cm thats even before the potential move of camarassa. We need a RB, winger/striker preferably younger, as the ageing squad is a worry. We must have money if we are prepared to spend 8 million on a player who has played a handful of games in the last few years.

Agree, terrible signing IMO. What a waste of money. Why are we not buying a right back and striker. Another aging sicknote on our books.

Whilst I agree this is hugely underwhelming it seems to me that the general consensus on this site is that we have a competitive starting 11 but no depth to the squad. I agree with this sentiment.
However, if a player like McCarthy has been told by Everton that he has NO future there and if Hodgson likes him enough to want him here then is it such a bad move for both parties? McCarthy has more chance of game time with us than with Everton; whether we like to admit it or not Everton are a club that are moving forward light years faster than us with their investment and ownership. We get an experienced Premier League player for a relatively low fee that will presumably offer an option in midfield rather than take up a starting position and he offers cover for injuries which we seem to rack up at an alarming rate. Yes he's not exciting, no he's not young, yes he's had injuries but could he do a job? Probably.
Personally I would like to see Luke Dreher get more of an opportunity but realistically Roy isn't the manager for that... And, he's also had bad injuries but that seems to be forgotten because he's "one of our own"!!

So we will have McArthur, McCarthy, Luka, Meyer, and Kouyate who can play in central mid (technically, Schlupp and Riedewald can play there too). We usually play with three. If Camarasa comes in too, we will have six first-team central mids. This spells trouble to me for several reasons. We are either planning for life post-Luka which is bad or Meyer will be pushed on the wing for good, which is bad.

I have nothing against bulking up in central mid but do not do so with a very injury-prone player who has hardly played in the past 20 months.

It's Wilf gone, only my opinion. If he goes will have lots of different options and sure Luka is going as well. Very depressing and hope I am completely wrong.
