I haven’t read all of this thread, so this has probably been said but the reason this idea is silly is, much as it would be nice to have a long term plan, it’s not realistic. Every manager is a few results away from the sack. Roy has a contract, which I believe he will fulfil and that’s as long term as it gets. What’s the alternative? Invest in and gamble on an inexperienced coach and groom them for the job when Roy retires? And then what? He makes a name for himself and goes to a bigger club or he struggles and gets sacked. The next time we’re without a manager, we’ll have to interview the best candidates around at the time, and that’s it. Supposedly, if you're Southampton, you have a card index that identifies your next manager or striker, etc., if they're available. The flaw with this is that managers and footballers can only ever be judged on past performance and, like stocks and shares, past performance is no guarantee of future results; FdB was a classic example (great at Ajax, a disaster elsewhere, and how many players score a shed load at one club and fcuk all anywhere else).

This model of theirs hasn't failed yet, has it? Better to have options than nothing. Most of the time they've used one of their options. Baffling how people rubbish this preparation months after criticising for not preparing. That's football fans.

Everything you say about the Southampton model makes a lot of sense Rudi...and yet I have reservations. Maybe it's the law of diminishing returns if more clubs do it; maybe it's a distrust of corporate dogma: Southampton get so wedded to their idea that they can't dump it when, for reasons they don't understand, it doesn't work. I don't know... something just makes me wonder whether it could just prove a bit daft some times. Maybe not and it's interesting for sure. On the face of it, there's no question the cost-benefit is huge. And yet only Southampton appear to really embrace it. Why? We should always have recruits in mind and we should always have scouted them and researched them as individuals before we try to sign them. And yes, our recruitment policy does not seem in any way coordinated.

If somebody comes up better who you've not been monitoring through live at the match scouting and regular weekly screen analysis then there's nobody prohibiting you from choosing them instead. I'd rather us start with a list of players or managers analysed for 2 years than a blank sheet of paper, our 'due diligence', parish getting bored with it as holiday number 1 of 6 is going on or Southampton or whoever else leaving us the last one to hire.

You mention "Judged on past performance" - I am unsure if you meant on results alone.I believe that results should be judged in context. Southampton appointed Pochettino after his contract at Espanyol was terminated with them bottom of the table.I believe that there were financial restrictions at the club which precipitated his departure. Southampton go into much greater depth, looking at style of play, coaching methodology, coaching ethos etc etc and that is why they appointed Pochettino. I recall there was incredulity when the unknown Pochettino who had just left a side at the bottom of the table replaced Adkins who had done really well, securing successive promotions but Southampton's in-depth analysis ensured they knew what they were getting. The rest,as they say, is history.

I'm probably going to get stick for these suggestions because they're both untested in the Premier League, but I'm gonna throw Graham Potter (Ostersunds FK) and Gary White (Chinese Taipei) into the ring. Potter's record speaks for itself, 7 years in charge, 3 promotions (from amateur 4th tier to top flight) and a Europa League Last 32 tie against Arsenal to look forward to which would definitely raise his stock if he wins. Has taken some distinctly average looking players (York City and Middlesborough rejects Jamie Hopcutt and Curtis Edwards, Swedish second tier player Saman Ghoddos) into targets for Championship+ teams or even full internationals, so his tactics and player development skills are pretty clear. Just a risk sending him to the Prem for the first time. Gary White has had a fairly modest career so far, mainly taking on low ranking national teams and taking them to record high rankings (most notable taking Guam to the brink of Asian Cup qualification). He also took a Chinese League One side who looked certain for relegation to mid-table after joining late in the season, so he knows how to work under pressure. He was interviewed for the England U21 job last year too but it went to Boothroyd, and has a tenuous link with Crystal Palace by calling up youth player Will Donkin, who's developed pretty nicely when he's been with the Taiwan national team. Again, though, would be a big risk.
