We may only need 1 defenders in terms of numbers but it seems as de Boer doesn't hold our current defenders in high regard. We want to be confident in possession and dann, Kelly and Delaney are not comfortable in possession.

But if he watched the games in the second half of the year he would have seen that both Tomkins and Kelly playing alongside Sakho were good and could well conclude that it was the coaching that was at fault in the first half. Ward's game also improved when he had a pair of central defenders next to him rather than a pair of headless chickens

Kelly in particular iimpressed (me) in that he had never had a chance as CB before, and came in and did on the whole OK at PL level.
