Well recently people were pretty sure that the US didn't want a racist, mysognistic arsehat to be president.... People were also pretty sure that the UK would stay in the EU.

Both were close in the end, but I think both victories came as rather a surprise to those 'who were sure what the public wanted'.

Although I think the 'ban the bomb' won't do him any good - Negotiation with 'terrorists' isn't necessarily unproductive. Sooner or later you have to deal with the issues that cause the problem, rather than the symptoms of the problem.

But certainly, he's probably right about Trident, but wrong on the nuclear option. We need really to look at a shift to a land based missile option (even if its more expensive). Trident as a solution is very much a cold war 'last strike' scenario - and lacks the kind of range of operation that would be useful to cover the middle East, and far east.

Also I'd expect to see Nuclear proliferation across the middle east. Certainly Iran and Saudi Arabia are well on the way.

I was never sure that Trump wouldn't win.
Politics is moving to the right. Corbyn's politics belongs in the 1970's

I will let the experts decide which nuclear weapons we need but left to Jeremy, we would have none.

If the US election has taught us anything, anyone is electable. A constantly lying egotist who's election promises were basically simple, unquantified, statements, opinion and often outright impossible or illegal, who was wracked with controversy, including sexual harassment, a fraud lawsuit and likely hasn't paid taxation in years was elected to the White House.

There are a lot of parallels between Corbyn and Trump in terms of the candidacy.

I really don't see that. Trump sensed the mood and took advantage of it. Corbyn is totally out of touch with the majority. He appeals to idealists. An election now would see Labour demolished.

If the fallout of Brexit really hits the poor/working class the hardest and no early election is called then it really could be anyone's come 2020.

Mezzer's bet of a currently non-existent party winning the next election still looks to be a decent punt.

Too simplistic. Brexit is not a party political issue.

The Tories will suffer if they fail to deliver hard Brexit and Labour will not benefit from opposing it.
If Labour want to prepare well for 2020, they need a new leader.

Tell me this sort of mentality isn't representative of most people of your persuasion and further left.

A lot of underlying hostility even in your average boycott. No doubt I'd be physically assaulted for carry the wrong newspaper.

It's all basically Mods v Rockers for the ignorant of the 21st century.

A while ago, Ed Milliband put forward a suggestion of caps on energy bills. In the press he was roundly castigated (especially in the Mail).
Imagine my surprise when the Mail lauds and heaps praise on Theresa May when she posits the same idea.

Teresa May could be implicated in institutional child abuse and the Mail would find a way to dress her up in a union Jack and spew platitudes.

Cornyn could cure cancer and the Mail would find a way to trivialize or demean it.

Feel free to provide convincing evidence I'm wrong, as I do have an open mind.

Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune)

What is the point you are making? Clearly the 'Mail' is right wing, similarly the 'Guardian' is liberal left - so what?

We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell]

Over 75 percent of the press are right wing.

I'm addressing the point that started this thread off. Do you agree then that factual reporting is nowhere near as important as incessant driving of a narrative?

I think that anyone who doesn't take anything written in any newspaper with a large pinch of salt is daft.
