It amuses me no end that the same board right wingers who were so astoundingly offended by Emily Thornberry's lazy classist remarks last week find Dave Whelan's lazy racist remarks this week so palatable. At least those of us on the left are not hypocrites, and criticise all 'isms not matter the source. Right-wingers, as usual, are not equal opportunity observers.

I don't think the Thornberry episode has anything to do with class. She was trying to imply that the sort of people who live in Rochester are your typical flag waving, van driving, UKIP supporting types.
It was political suicide because it mocks pride in the English flag and the working man. It was also a demonstration of the sort of middle class, liberalism that the Labour party seems to stand for these days.
The implication for voters, rightly or wrongly, is that Labour put the rights of immigrants before those of the average working class white man.

I'll never stop finding it amusingly ironic that the poster known as Hrolf The Ganger, that hater of all things multicultural and one so terribly put out by the "waves of immigrants" he perceives, and so terrified of being "swamped" by foreigners, takes his name from a Viking invader who conquered foreign lands and imposed his culture on them at the point of a sword.

The historian Adhemar recorded that on nearing his death Rollo [Hrolf] had a hundred Christian prisoners beheaded in front of himself to appease and honour the old gods

It does show a commitment to faith when you have to behead 100 Christian prisoners, personally, just to appease the old gods. Most people complain about giving up a Sunday lie in.

Old gods don't mess about.

Where as everyone knows that the people who live in Rochester are typically serial child molesters. No wait, that's Rochdale, ah well - They're probably all at it as well.

So it's about class, then? We agree after all.

There is certainly a tenancy for some in the middle class to defend the rights of others, whether they want it or not, but this particular episode was about politics.

Thank god that UKIP will put the rights of the working class man in front of immigrants, but also firmly behind the Upper and Middle Class (migrant or otherwise), where they belong.

Huzzah!

(Also in terms of migrants and immigrants, Labour didn't actually put the rights of either above the working class, at worst all they did was extend the same rights in employment to both the migrants and native British working class).

The working class also includes UK immigrants, in low and non-skilled working class (and is possibly racist dependent on how you define the separation of race and nationality within the question ie at what point are you a national. Citizenship?

Indeed the middle class isn't really a class that's easily defined, it tends to be much more schizophrenic, drawing attributes from the upper class, working class and aristocratic classes.

Also most people mistake upper working classes for middle classes (a moot point, as in a post-industrial UK definitions of class defined by industrial relationships are meaningless).

That was in the 10th century of course. Unfortunately there are those who still think beheading of infidels is fashionable. Obviously the last 1000 years or so passed them by.

Perceptions of class seems to be more about upbringing, education and taste these days.
