his hold up play is poor Michael Appleton said earlier this year when he was manager of Blackburn that he wanted him to be better holding the ball up.

This post has been merged from a topic called 'Jordan Rhodes (rumour)' by Moose Rhodes? Where we're going, we don't need.... Rhodes.

Blackburn just announced the signing of Rudy Gestede from Cardiff on loan until January with a permanent transfer fee agreed for January....... Could it be they are preparing for life sans Rhodes? Venkys track record suggests they wouldn't be committing to a signing like that unless they were sure someone would make way........

BLackburn paid 8 million for him I believe the fee was up to £8 Mill. The fee was not dependant on clauses, just agreed instalments up to £8m, so Blackburn have to pay it no matter what, and they can't currently afford to do so. Rhodes is on a reported £37k a week, combined with an estimated £8-12m transfer fee, that's an enormous investment for a player I'm not convinced we need. I'd rather see that spread over 3-4 players to strengthen other areas of the team. Changed our tune a little. It's all academic anyway, Defoe is off to FC Toronto in January.

How have I changed my tune? My very first post on this thread stated that I thought Rhodes was good player but not what we need at the moment, and I said exactly the same in the post you quoted.

whatever our thoughts on certain areas of his game the guy is a goalscorer! he is only 23 and like gayle we can work on his hold up play etc. blackburn overpaid for his services IMO...in a bid to get his goals to gamble on promotion...the gamble didnt work. blackburns parachute payments end this summer i think so they cant afford to keep players like rhodes. i think they will have to take a small hit on him maybe 2m. if there is anyway we can get him we should...a strike partnernship of gayle/rhodes would serve us well for many years to come.

I happen to believe that IF we were relegated (God forbid !) and had this strikeforce they could be a potent combination in the Championship. In the Premier League there seems to be a proclivity to play with one up top. Edited by Willo (27 Nov 2013 10.50am)

Agreed, but can we afford to have £12-14m worth of players making up the numbers but not racking up the goals or just warming the bench, I think not, that's a massive investment to make with no guarantees of it coming off.

i think we are all pretty sure TP will be looking at a striker in january. will 2010 sanction a kenyne jones/peter crouch type signing for lets say 4m upfront with on sell-on value, or a jordan rhodes type signing for lets say 6m upfront? were not going to get a proven PL goalscorer with the funds we have, so somebody like rhodes who the outlay would be a bit more, but offer potentially 10 years of goalscoring would surely be more appealing. at the end of the day all these debates are purely speculation/opinions and none of us know what the budget will be come jan. i wouldnt be suprised to seee TP given something in the region of 10m, with a gentlemans agreement he gets nothing if we go down, and works with what hes got/wheel and deal...i dont think for one minute that TP wouldav agreed to become our manager without a reasonable amount of money to spend come january! Personally I don't think Jordan Rhodes is right for us and I think we should go for someone else.
