Well, according to my butcher (this is in Somerset where sheep farming is massive and he buys direct from the farmer) they don't just take the parts that Brits find unappetising. Because we produce the finest lamb in the EU, and because many of the EU countries are more selective in their purchase of meat (butchers rather than supermarket cheap stuff), farmers are able to command around 100+ Euros per whole carcass - much better pricing than the UK will pay. Without the EU market, they should easily be able to outsell New Zealand imports (the currently cheaper option for the UK). The tragedy is that, in major cities there are so few decent butchers left to sell this lamb - I know when I left Sydenham 10 years ago, my nearest non-halal butchers were in Thornton Heath or West Wickham(and the Thornton Heath one has now gone I believe). Or maybe they could transfer all those green fields to goat farming instead...... Thank you Becky, I believe you have made my point If we crash out then our market goes. Most of the lamb sold in the UK is from New Zealand. British lamb is indeed high quality. It's a shame it won't be around much longer. I am struggling with the part about easily outselling New Zealand lamb, or anyone else's. If WTO rules apply British lamb won't sell any more in the UK than it currently does, probably less because there will be more cheap lamb coming in. So how does that replace our EU sales? I rather feel that the ADHB may be something of an authority on this point, albeit I am sure your local butcher also has a PhD in Economics. And as for goat farming, I can only assume that is a joke. The land will just be left to degrade.

In fairness. You completely swerved my entire post.

All of these things will readjust accordingly too, it's currently this way (i.e. our exports of lamb to the EU) due to the status quo. That's not to say that we will import less in future, nor that we won't export to other places instead of them.

We aren't. It's pretty much neutral but in slight export favour at the moment.

We consume 62,905 Tonnes of Lamb (year to date) We import 44,077 Tonnes from New Zealand Source IHS Maritime & Trade These things won't readjust in the case of a hard brexit. We shall be into WTO trade with massively reduced financial supports for UK farmers. Even if new and lucrative markets could be found that are not simply on WTO terms, you think that can be done instantly?

From figures published this February. During 2017 the UK imported 80,200 tonnes of sheep meat, 11% lower than in 2016 and the lowest volume for at least 20 years, according to the latest data from HMRC. UK sheep meat imports were worth £369.5 million in 2017, 7% more than in 2016. Meanwhile UK exports of sheep meat grew by 14%, to 89,000 tonnes, which were worth £384.3 million.

You're already down to less than 70% there using your own, old and incorrect, figures. Everything will readjust regardless of however we leave. Who's talking instantly either?
