Surely this whole Benteke argument can be setlled with stats and facts? Wilf has scored more goals in 90 mins (2nd half Bournemouth, 1st half Brighton) than Big Ben has scored all season. In total, we have 5 players who've scored more than him! That would be a valid comparison if those 90 minutes were the only 90 minutes Wilf had played. He'd had a couple of poorer games leading up to that, for example. It also ignores that Benteke does other things (or is supposed to) than head balls into the net. However, comapring Wilf's season with Benteke's is like comparing dung and chocolate cake and you don't need any statistics to demonstrate that.

The tactics in the last quarter were for WH to heave the ball up to CB and hope for a knock down. Brighton twigged and had 5 players surrounding CB every time it was punted high to him. And when he did get his head to it first there was no one in close proximity. I think even Mo Salah would have struggled to make any impact playing that way.

Made perfect sense brining Benteke on as the equalising goal we conceded last week was from a set-piece. Also, we didn’t create a single thing in the second half and perhaps a change up front was needed. Similar to Burnley, they put a man just to get in his way and the two CB’s go for the ball. So he was up against 3 players every time the ball was kicked in his direction. Any time a team put 2 or 3 players on you shows you do have some qualities- similar to when teams double up on wilf in wide areas. I’m all up for moaning when players have been below par and Christian has been at times this season, but the word ‘scapegoat’ comes to mind if your looking to get on his back yesterday.

Below par at times this season? Is this a joke? Giroud - £15mil Edited by The_Dumps (15 Apr 2018 5.09pm)

Basically as a number of other elements come into play, how long left on their current contract, agents fee, signing fee and wages etc.

Personally it’s been Benteke’s seeming lack of effort that has frustrated more than anything. Yesterday he was the “fresh legs” but did little chasing. He cannot be blamed for goal kicks being aimed out giving him no chance but when the ball was played around their back four I wanted him to press not stand there pointing. Any player can have a bad day but at least he can put in some hard yards.

I'm not one for all stats it's just about earning a chance to wear the Palace jersey and it looks like Benteke will end up with 2 goals and that's not worthy of one for me. He may have kept ball out of our net, but he cost £30 million the club brought him in to score goals and that's not happened as it, the big man probably kept us up last season but with all good wishes he doesn't send us down this season. The whole team have worked there rock's off to create chance's for him to score all season and he's not repaid them back and the club.

Taking all the things you have said comparing him and Giroud it is massively one sided.

On one hand I admire you sticking with him and I assume to show a united front but please promise me one thing, that after the last game against West Brom you come on here and give an honest seasons assessment of him because he is sure running out of games to let the hand brake off!

Thanks, you are right that i want a united front mate but do think he is getting more stick than others who might have a bad game simply because its the nature of his job to put the ball in the net, a bit like why a goalkeeper gets blamed when he lets a goal or two in, i think its easy to blame a striker and admit he hasnt had a great season like last, but also can see when he"s clearing a ball off the line, winning headers and taking two or three players out to free up someone else in the process ! We could pick any player you like for watford saturday, and analise him after, and im sure we could pick at least 5 things wrong with his game and apportion blame, and i doubt it would do his confidence any good for the next game, but we all got an opinion and pay our money, i just support whoever is in the shirt on the day !

It has been clear a number of times this season that when we are in a points position in the second half the front players are the first line of defence and hold position rather than press the opposition CB's. Wilf and Townsend were doing it in the second half before Benteke came on. When we were playing Sorloth and Benteke they both held the same position. This must be to do with maintaining the shape of the team rather than lose shape by running around chasing a lost cause. I think he is getting a lot of stick when actually he is doing what he has probably been told to do! His finishing on the other hand has been pretty pony!
