Three COVID-19 vaccine-infection combinations create highest quality antibodies - study - [Link]

Quote Triple-vaccinated people, COVID-19 recoverees who then had two vaccine doses or double-vaccinated people who were then infected exhibited high-quality antibodies, a two-year-long study found

Three encounters with the coronavirus spike protein from varying infection-vaccine combinations grant the immune system a high-quality (and not just high quantity) antibody response, according to a newly published study written by scientists who tracked the antibodies of vaccinated and recovered individuals for two years.

Stands to reason really, but good to know.

Portugal to drop COVID test requirement for arriving passengers - [Link]

Less faff now for those wishing to go to Portugal. Currently for vaccinated only (for non EU), though I expect that will change down the line to include the gallant unvaccinated too.

It's not over. Hopefully it's now the end game, but we must not let our guard down completely, or it could easily return and bite us in the rear end. Caution trumps complacency every time.

We are continuing to wear masks in crowded public places. I am avoiding anywhere that doesn't maintain stringent hygiene standards. The club I use continues to keep its doors and windows open when in use.

My wife, who works in the hospital, tells me that nothing has changed there. Infection control measures remain at very high levels.

I hope so after all its a hospital those levels should never drop.

You do wonder why so many people caught COVID in hospital where's Matron when you need her.

Nope, it's over. For most it's a cough & a sore throat at worse & with the warmer weather coming up even that'll decline.
Basic hygiene is a given as it should be at all times...

With the basic advice of:

- Get vaccinated initially to build base protection
- Accept that infection is inevitable and will offer additional protection
- Get boosters if in especially vulnerable groups and play it by ear if not
- Get on with life (with basic hygiene thrown into the mix)

we could've saved ourselves about 1000 pages..

There will always be proudly and vocal unvaccinated types who are angered that they're not being handed an equivalent of a war medal for their stance, just as there will be some who want to inject you in the eyeball every time you go out for a pint of milk. As you say, most people, as with anything in life are just getting on with things at this point.

Whilst large parts of the world remain unvaccinated further variants are likely. There is no guarantee they will all turn out like Omicron. So making assumptions, and being complacent, is an unwise strategy. It's not over until the fat lady has sung, and this is just the aria at the start of the third act. Just a bit gentler than what went before. It's rather foolish to remain in the bar celebrating and thinking that is the end of the performance, so you've no need to sit down again.

Perhaps we should lock down again WE - just to be on the safe side?

Vaccination doesn't stop virus evolution for respiratory viruses....this isn't the smallpox vaccine....you can still catch it.

Covid will evolve independent of whether someone is or isn't vaccinated.

Most viruses evolve into progressively weaker versions for reasons that have been said multiple times....that's what has predictably happened here, with the South African versions we are basically dealing with flu strength, which for most infected people won't even amount to that.

Vaccination provides a good base of protection against serious illness, as has been adequately demonstrated thus far. From that point on natural protection clearly builds on this. Again, just because some personally didn't get vaccinated and are irked that they're not being high fived about it, it doesn't mean we have to spend the rest of time pretending this vaccine has no merits. It does and they have been explained.

Clearly an argument could be made that by the time a vaccine reaches some areas of the world it'll be too late to provide such a foundation to begin with (even though a vaccine - natural infection combo has been demonstrated to provide strong and broad protection). That may well end up being the case as poor countries always get the short straw.

Vaccine effectiveness on reducing death isn't the focus of my post because that wasn't what I was responding to.

I have previoulsy talked about supporting vaccines for the vulnerable and elderly and based upon an individual's risk assessment I have never criticised those taking them.

So it's tiresome that unless I repeat myself some aren't satisfied.

Yeah, I'm proud of the fact that I wasn't meek in reacting against mandates. Apparently that's worthy of criticism....something I seem to be ripe for over those that basically called for punishing people.
