Pulling down statues won't change it and appeasing a small group of f***wits will only cause resentment that might not have existed previously. I know I'm fresh out of sympathy.

There is at least an argument to be made for these slave owner statues to be placed in museums - through democratic process tho - but when we start seeing videos of an anguished Leigh Francis and Ant and Dec; Little Britain, Mighty Boosh, and League of Gentlemen disappearing from our screens [Link] we have descended into farce. Nobody viewed these characters to be racist even weeks ago. If people are wanting the focus on be on genuine issues, it's a world away from the tokenism of scanning through TV archives to find something that's 'blackface' but isn't. Blackface was the intentional mocking of someones skin colour. Race wasn't the butt of the joke of any of the larger than life characters in these shows. Edited by BlueJay (11 Jun 2020 3.55pm) Fawlty Towers: John Cleese hits out at 'stupid' removal of episode [Link] I'm not sure what to think about this one, as it's such a horrible word that I'm sure most don't want to hear it, especially accidentally if they just happen to be watching. Cleese appears to politically gyrate from especially PC to bastion of nword free speech here though, and I get the feeling he's just pissed off because it's a show he was personally involved with.

Haven’t we been hearing the importance of black history is? Fine but white history is as important and should not be extinguished. Should go hand in hand.

In my opinion, if one can't understand that a programme made in the mid '70s might reflect prevailing attitudes and humour then you are clearly too dumb to bother about. Slavery was practiced by every nation and every continent. Sure the British dealt in it, much less than Arabs perhaps but we traded nevertheless. However, being a democracy opposition to it was allowed to increase to the extent that we were the first to ban it. Soon after we paid huge amounts of money to exterminate it throughout our empire....all while African countries still traded for many generations to come. Sure the British colonized, however, we left a legacy of infrastructure, industry, technology, education, democracy and rights the like of which never existed before in the lands we ruled. We even allowed people to come to our lands....a fools decision as now we are now repaid in hatred for our history and heritage.

I am getting wholly confused by footall and the BLM thing. Does it mean that none of the players will play right wing any more in case they get accused of being on the wrong side? To be accused of being a right winger could seriously impact a players career. No wonder Andros kept himself out of the team for so long with a pesky injury.

Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (12 Jun 2020 4.50pm) This whole period of time is about the polarisation of how people view the past and the present. By that measure, I find a mad rush to ban bo selecta and league of gentlemen rather absurd, but keeping the nword off prime time TV just because it was acceptable in the past, more something I'm in favour of. Not removing it totally though, because of the context in which it was used. People are of course entitled to nuance of opinion.

100% correct and I really don't get the fact that people feel oppressed here. They queue up to get into the country and rightly so, ours is a country of massive opportunity. You have to take the chance and work at it. There are so many instances of self made millionaires from poor backgrounds here, you have to put the effort in though, but some it appears just want it handed to them.
