I'm not sure you have the vote unless registered for council tax. Emphasis - not sure.

However.the sponging underclass you allude to: do many of them actually vote?

In order to vote you have to be on the Electoral Register. Whilst paying Council Tax and claiming benefits from the council are separate from this an efficient council would be expected to check. I would hope that your council has a simple program that compare voters to taxpayers and highlights exceptions for someone to follow up.

During the Poll Tax revolt (1990's) when people were refusing to pay a friend said I am not paying the council (Bromley) will never know. I warned him that unlike many of the inner city boroughs Bromley was known for its efficiency in tax matters. He was fined after a courts summons.

Bromley was selected for the voter id trial because of their track record. Meanwhile in some inner boroughs people appear on the Electoral Roll who don't exist or are classed as a UK citizen when they are not.

But as the poster said the great unwashed tend not to bother to vote anyway.

Personally I would only allow those who pay into the tax system a vote on electing a government (with exceptions like the retired or disabled).....like the old days.

We have a huge number of people who take out more than they put in getting to vote on the economic direction the country goes in.

Yet they are the opposite of economically successful themselves.

Whilst I wouldn't disagree with this, my point is more geared to enforcing those who ARE eligible to actually cast a vote; something many hundreds of thousands didn't in the referendum out of pure laziness....ironically the section that are now moaning the loudest!

Along with the right to vote comes the right to not do so. Looking at the list of utter f*ckwit candidates presenting themselves at every election, that is often the only realistic option. I don't want it on my conscience that I assisted in putting any of them in a position of power.

Forcing people to partake in an activity they don't wish to partake in isn't democracy......It's authoritarianism.

People who don't contribute into the system (with exceptions) shouldn't be deciding upon that system.

That's an encouragement to contribute......not forcing them to.

I have family who are resident in Australia/Tasmania and over there it is compulsory to vote. This was introduced back in bygone days due to poor turnouts and I think one can be fined 50 Australian dollars if it is not your first offence.

I disagree with the former and agree with the latter.

I've heard about this....Forcing those who don't want to contribute to vote.....Sounds on par with the soviets.

Nothing to stop people from simply writing 'no suitable candidate' on their ballot paper.

Then their views are known, one way or another.

make them follow the Aussie system...they need to get to the ballot box and tick the 'no vote' option.

Having been a counting officer I can confirm people do and worse, not that I blame them. The problem is that the system counts these as spoilt votes along with the idiots who really do mess up their ballot paper. My guess is that far more people deliberately spoil their votes then make a genuine mistake.

However the politicians can kid themselves that the electorate are idiots, don't know how to vote and should be ignored.

I agree with the other poster all ballot papers should have a "none of the above" box to tick. The parties could not ignore that especially if the number got into double figures they would be all over it trying to understand why and how to grab those votes.

Additionally providing that option should increase voter turnout as people would know that their vote was being properly counted.
