It is obviously a stand-by-stand approach for a new stadium, and there are many reasons why only one stand is being rebuilt for the time being:

Our uncertainty over staying in The Prem, with the money and fans that brings

The Safety Certificate is overdue on the Main Stand, so that is a priority. Remedial works would be costly, so much more cost effective to do a rebuild.

If we get Planning Permission for this stand, then it makes it easier to get permission for the other stands, in due course.

CPFC did not want to ground-share with anyone whilst the stadium was rebuilt. A stand-by-stand approach would better facilitate this.

As Willo said, I'm sure there is a coherent design/strategy for the other stands which will all make sense, in due course.

The club have explored options of relocating. Potential Legal challenges to the couple of suitable sites would make this an extremely costly and time-consuming option, with no guarantee of success.

Indeed.

IIRC, a while ago SP said in an interview that the plan was to sort the main stand & increase the capacity so that, in theory, they could rehouse those in the Arthur temporarily whilst it was upgraded. Kinda makes sense & if the main stand is done it's an easier discussion to have with planners & residents to say you want it all to blend in to one etc.

A new build from the ground up is much easier & cheaper than working with and incorporating an existing structure - especially if you want to retain use of it. The most cost effective option is to build new at a different site but that assumes that land is available & the club wants to relocate - neither apply to us.

It is well documented that the club did look at alternative sites but nothing came to fruition.

I suppose moving to a new site would have meant that the cost would have been offset by Selhurst Park being sold for development.Think Arsenal got in some £130 Mill for the Highbury development. But I suspect us moving to a brand new location and having a complete stadium built would have cost much more that £100 Mill even after the sale of SP.

I think you'd be surprised. Everton's 50,000 seater was talked about in the region of £150m with the cost of the land & new roads offset by the sale of Goodison.

If we were to fully update SP - including the AW, Whitehorse and Holmesdale (to a degree) - it will cost considerably more.

The projected costs at Spurs include all sorts including the additional land, compensation payments, renting Wembley etc - the total cost of their 'project' far outweighs the actual construction costs.

Originally there was talk of either a brand new stadium located elsewhere or a rejuvenation of 'Selhurst Park' "Stand by stand" so the narrative was that if we remained in situ, all 4 stands would be replaced.

Whilst of course the new Main Stand looks rather magnificent and the overall upgrade most welcome and impressive , clearly only one of the 4 stands will see a significant improvement and we will still have the outdated 'Arthur Wait'.

That said, projects can change depending on circumstances and finances and it is welcoming to see committment to upgrading the facilities at the ground - it is very much needed ! A great deal of effort has gone into where we are now and I dare say the road ahead will also be littered with obstacles.

The Arthur is the biggest technological challenge faced as part of the ground renovation as it it literally 'sits' on the ground, which will mean any replacement will need extensive and exorbitantly expensive ground works simply to get it above ground level....not to mention the possible impact on the houses behind, so there'll likely be a CPO requirement to buy that row of houses as well.

I think the darned Amex was built for some £95 Mill but it was completed in 2011.
It was reported that the Emirates cost in the region of £390 Mill and it was completed in 2006.
Also reported that the cost of Tottenham's new ground could reach £800 Mill.

The thing is, it was built on baron land, with easy access and tbh it is pretty much a soulless place...a lot of 'wavy' style but no substance...even inside its a hotchpotch of differing types of stands with odd levels. Nice enough but not the architectural mecca some seem to think it to be....in short it looks like it only cost £95m

Uprooting scores of families from their homes with a CPO just so we can have a shiny new AW stand? Doesn't seem right at all. Keep the AW as it is size wise but refurbish and re-build section by section.

There is no way a CPO will be passed for a football stadium now in a built up area.
The solution to the Sainsburys issue with their land required for the main stand is simple..Just call it the Sainsburys Stadium or the Sainsburys stand. They will endless PR and Palace get the stand they want.

The AMEX was designed by KSS the same people who have designed the reburbished SP !

And our new stand looks remarkably like one of the stands at the Amex ! From pitchside anyway, don't know about the rest.

I do not confess to know the details but I would hope they are fully compensated not just market value + gift card for the club shop. I do get it but what alternative do Palace have though. For the good of the many not the few type thing.

Thats clearly the discussion that the club, council and other interested parties will need to have....but is years off...I cant see that happening within the next decade at least!

It happened for Arsenal and Spurs...and lets not forget that the council have already said they'd support CPO's if needed.
