i was at uni near Coventry at the time and a few things I recall were

1) it was organised well in advance - but as a fancy dress party, it wasn't meant to be a riot
2) local Brum police told Palace to expect 500 - they have been heavily criticised for their lack of intel
3) Brum arrived early and were queuing outside pubs at 11am (in the days when pubs couldn't open early)
4) about 500 idiots did go to the sport centre in error so arrived late
5) the big thing that hasn't been mentioned yet is that these late arrivals then beat up the steward on the gate in the Holmesdale corner (left open as post Hillsborough)and as they steamed in that caused a crush in the away end that resulted in some spilling onto the pitch and the rest is history

A bizarre game and day all round.

Can't believe this was almost 30 years ago.

I am an old b******.

I remember being in Thornton Heath high street before the game. If I remember right it was a warm day but for some reason I'd worn a jacket that day. Bloody good job I did because I think I'd have had a proper kicking if I hadn't done the jacket up over my palace shirt. It was absolute chaos.

It was a glorious sight indeed ... me and my mates were standing in the right hand side of the arthur near the front

It all kicked off (as we knew it would from about 2 weeks previous to the game) .... this northern burn cock dressed as superman, cape and everything, came running down the side of the pitch giving it large.

Got to us and a fist came out of the arthur and knocked him spark out on the side of the pitch ... it was so f****** funny it was mental .. I pissed my self.

Before the Games in those days we used to drink in the Crescent Arms (no longer). We were sat in there having our usual 3 or 4 pints before the game when a load of Birmingham supporters waltzed in dressed in fancy dress. I remember 2 in particular, 1 dressed as a Ballerina and another as a Nun. After a few pints it go a bit wild and they started dancing on the tables.
And then of course it all kicked off later in the Ground.....
The Holmesdale End always lacked a bit of atmosphere due to having no roof, but as BCFC brought down 9000 fans it was electric!

I was in the Arthur that match and it was a game I will never forget.

The atmosphere before the game was great, they all turned up in fancy dress and in the pub before the match seemed up for a laugh.

However, once the match and results started to go against them, it kicked off big time. They completely lost the plot. One of the first times I had seen horses on the pitch trying to control things.

To see one of my mates get punched by Snow White was something we still talk about now. Very strange!!

And I also remember the local paper had a back page picture of a huge brawl with all these fancy dress characters.

Some people are like Slinkies … not really good for anything, but you can’t help smiling when you see one tumble down the stairs.

Kevin Day was discussing the Brum fancy dress match on Talks***e this week. He said one of the most disturbing things he'd seen was a man dressed as The Pink Panther drinking a pint through his costumes' eye. Made me chuckle a bit Kev

Also, it turns out that I know the guy (pinkish shirt / grey trousers) at the front of the stand dishing out punches to the Zulus. Apparently they knocked his radio out of his hands and he saw the red mist. At least he said he thinks that's him as he'd never seen the footage back in those 30years.
