Exit poll showing a left-based coalition has defeated the far right nationalists by a substantial margin.

Excellent news for us! Starmer has played a blinder with the small boats already as, if the right wing wants to expel migrants, the left surely will want to keep them! The number making the illegal crossing of the Channel will be down to a solitary bloke in a canoe by the end of the week...

hats off to palace, they were always gonna be louder, and hate to say it but they were impressive ALL bouncing and singing.

Certainly confounds all expectations. Let's see how this pans out in the actual vote.

Macron - like Sunak - took a gamble on a snap election; both have lost. Sunak goes but will Macron do the same? Who forms the government; a quasi communist led coalition? What if Le Pen's party is the largest single party; what say will they have. Stand by for a very entertaining Olympics as the left and right battle it out in the streets?

For me this is very clear proof that the desire to avoid something can be stronger than the desire to achieve something. When faced with something you really dislike the enemy of your enemy is your friend, whatever your own differences might be.

The horse trading that will now follow between ideologically different parties will doubtless be very difficult and France could become unstable for a while. Macron has some work to do.

Whether this is a problem postponed or defeated only time will tell, but it will certainly shake Le Pen.

Confusing but people will get what they voted for I guess.

The right, in France and the UK, are routed.

If it proves accurate, then yes, not a good night. Not quite sure I would count the Conservatives as being 'Right' anymore but that does not detract from what I can see has been a good weekend for the Left. And to be fair to the French, at least their 'Left' does actually espouse some Leftwing views.

But this is proof, if ever more needed, that my side of the divide are not going to vote their way out of this mess. Sooner more people wake up this, the better.

This would just be a delay of the inevitable.

Some of the Left think that ideology is more important than protecting borders and security. If they dictate policy then the disastrous proportions of this will become ever more evident.

the electorate will not be thwarted by electoral systems and shenanigans forever.

So how do you think “your side of the divide” must do it? No fudging please, let’s have an unequivocal answer.

Please also explain what you believe entities you do it, if you don’t have the votes to do so?
