Wow that Midfield! Luka not up to it anymore, Schlupp did his best to play Everton through on goal, Eze and Olise just bullied out of it. What has Will Hughes done wrong. Apart from Dacoure, he's possibly our best CM. Can't remember him doing much wrong in the games he has played. Think we could be in a bit of a pickle if Vieira doesn't get hold of this. Not a knee jerk reaction but the manor in the way we played has got me worried!

Just about the worst performance under Patrick Vieira.

Anything less than a confident win against Southampton and I think we're in a relegation scrap.

Guehi and Eze can forget about going to the World Cup.

A couple of days ago, we were a few players short of being a top 6 team.
Funny how the mood changes, so quickly!

You're talking about Kouyate.

A very poor result against certainly not 1 of the best sides. Always likely when you don't strengthen sufficiently in the summer window. The big spending of summer 2021 was clearly a one-off and forced on the club due to the need to replace all the older players at the end of their contracts at the time and to reduce the average age.
Lack of depth perfectly summed up with Luka replacing the suspended Doucoure in midfield.
Let us hope there is proper investment in January & not the continuing arrogance to go with what we have or it could well be a tense season.

Even before they kicked off you could see our midfield would struggle against the physicality of Everton's, but then I look at our bench and wonder who I would have played instead. Schlupp has not been good enough in central midfield, Jairo is as slow as Luka and Hughes is only just back from sickness. Philips is a promising youngster, but he is not PL quality yet. I think Vieira just decided to play his best players, even if it meant the team was imbalanced. It has delivered results against Leeds and Wolves, but without Cheikh with his ability on the ball and tackling ability we really struggled and gifted Everton the win.

No one had a good game and we just need to put it behind us. One thing that is clear (if it wasn't clear enough before) Luka can no longer keep up with the pace of the PL. The second thing is if we don't sign at least one first-team ready defensive/box-to-box midfielder in January then it's going to be a difficult second half to the season.

Awful today. It was the same as Leicester but this time we got punished.

Decoure sorely missed and worrying that PV thought Luka would be able to cope in their on his own. He has to learn from that.

I think the only positive is that the game clearly highlighted that we need to invest during January.

Midfielder,RB are musts...plus a couple more to add competition and depth. The way we finished the game was footballing suicide with Schlupp and Eze as the only two CMs. Very naive. Wilf (in Coleman's back pocket) as frustrating as ever, attackers anonymous and defence left completely exposed, our press for their second was so disjointed they were a able to pick us to pieces thr entire length of the pitch.

A lot of hard work needed next week on the training ground to get ready for Southampton.

Believe I said in the Wolves thread I was confused at how we managed to get the win despite the unbalanced performance.

Got the receipts to prove it guv!!

Well, certainly a bad display today and substitutions didn’t help as well. As for our midfield, it’s been non existent all season but luckily we have picked up points with it being poor. We have one midfield player every match selected with Dacoure being the best to choose from. Sadly he is always on his own and today it was Luka’s turn to be our one midfielder. Yes, he was at fault for Everton’s first goal but that isn’t our problem, it’s team selection with no support for our one midfielder who gets selected. Luka in the second half was then replaced and our midfield suffered even more as our midfield had no recognised midfield players? As for the other players chosen to play in midfield each week they are square pegs in round holes. It doesn’t work having so many forward style players playing in midfield as they aren’t strong enough to battle for the ball or positional play in the middle. So often this season as today they couldn’t pass or control the ball to set up attacks nor support anyone around them. The back four are under tremendous pressure because of this and today they couldn’t hold out. Everton had an easy day I’m afraid and unless changes in the middle are made today’s result will happen more often. A balanced midfield is required and some of our favourite players need to be on the bench where they will be more beneficial coming on later in the game?

I would normally try to cling to the odd positive after a performance like that, but there weren’t any. Our away form is nose diving. Until there are signs of recovery I will not be shelling out again.

What a diabolical result and I for one expected a defeat.
In a moment of sheer madness I predicted a 1-1 draw but then reflected on my sanity.
From all accounts a sub-standard performance, shame on the players.

I am in an irascible mood and according to my dear wife I have misery etched on my face. She has suggested that we cancel our reservation for culinary delights tonight as I shall just be, in her words, a "Moaning minnie" and far from pleasant company.

In many ways this is the worst - and most humiliating - defeat in our recent PL years.

How on earth can PV regain the confidence of his players after totally beeing crashed by an Everton manager not seen as particularly bright?
