I've always said and I still believe that Gallagher is in play and he'll remain our number one target until the window shuts. Nothing has persuaded me to change the view that a deal, if unlikely, remains within the bounds of possibility.

The latest news, that both Chelsea and Gallagher himself rejected a loan bid by West Ham last week tells us much (if true). That Chelsea wasn't interested in a loan tells you only that if he left, they'd want to sell him not loan him.

That Gallagher himself became involved in responding tells you a lot more because that being the case, Chelsea must have asked him for his view which tells in turn that they are willing to at least consider his departure. You don't ask a player for his response to an incoming bid if you have no intention of letting him leave.

I think at this point we can safely say that Chelsea isn't actively looking to move Connor on, but if the right bid did come in and Connor was interested then yes, a deal could be done.

Which, of course, brings us to Wilf. The table is set for a deal although there are a lot of moving pieces that would need to fall into place to make one happen. If Chelsea's interest in Wilf is genuine and if Connor was willing to move permanently to Palace (both big "ifs" at this point but at the same time, both not unrealistic possibilities) then I wouldn't be remotely surprised if something happened before the window shut.

In the end, Patrick clearly loves Connor. Wilf clearly wants to play CL football. Connor clearly wants first-team football and though he doesn't want to leave Chelsea, it's not impossible that he accepts it may right now be the best move for his career. And he was clearly happy at Palace. It's not hard to imagine everything might (might, not will) fall into place.

I think as I've said before Connor is absolutely our number 1 target and we won't spend any serious money elsewhere in the window until a deal for him is either done or completely ruled out. I'd be very surprised if conversations between Palace and Chelsea weren't at least ongoing in the background at this point. This deal gives both clubs something they want. It makes too much sense.

There is a lot of logic in what Syd says.

However there are lots of bridges to cross and obstacles to. If we assume Chelsea want Zaha and he is happy to go. Also assume we want Gallagher (and other Chelsea players i suspect).

The Man U percentage is a problem and that needs to be overcome particularly if take another player in exchange or part exchange as the respective values are then less certain.

We don't particularly want to sell Zaha unless we get an offer we can't refuse so will hold on to him if we can't get this because of his value to us. Also if he goes we need to replace and this takes time.

I wonder if Wilf can be persuaded to sign a 2 year extension with an agreement he can be loaned to Chelsea for this season with an agreed purchase price of £40 million. We also get a loan fee.

We buy or Loan Lozano from Italy as replacement.

There are 3 players who come to mind in Chelsea benchwarmers who come to mind. I have ignored Hudson-Odoi as although he may be willing to leave on loan I don't think he would suit us
Gallagher , RLC and Broja.

We can not afford RLC wages so if he is permanent he needs to take a wage drop if Loan Chelsea need to pay half wages. Therefore I think if it is him it will be a loan with obligation to buy

Other 2 are on lower wages so this is not a problem.
We know Gallagher and he knows us and this is really positive. However he is Chelsea supporter and wants to try his luck. My guess this weekend will be the telling time if he is not a starter he may ask for a move.

Broja impressed at Soton and would suit us so I think he is a possibility.

I wonder if early next week Broja will arrive on a permanent for £20 million and Gallagher on a season Loan with agreed purchase price of £30 million with Wilf going other way on loan (after signing new contract) with an obligation for Chelsea to buy

Conor’s issue is, if does get regular game time, then there is no chance of going to the World Cup, Southgate has said numerous times, if you are not playing a regular 90ish minutes for your club, you won’t get picked, the world and his dog knows that Conor will not feature that much for Chelsea, my gut feeling is he will join us

Chelsea have got games against Spurs Leeds Leicester & Southampton before the transfer window closes -

One could argue that the games against Leeds & Leicester would be the best chance of CG getting minutes (or not) - the Southampton game is probably too close to the transfer window closing to influence anyone's decision-

Tuchel loves rotation. This is going to be a fraught season. He will want to keep a player like Gallagher around, especially with him not looking likely of going to the world cup.

I think Conor will stay there. Ruben or Hudson-Odoi maybe.

I ain't got nuthin' funny to say. Sorry.

If we did get Connor and Wilf goes Eze could play in Wilfs position, and loan another DM.

Running with Syd's post for a moment, It seems to me:
1. We are the club in the weaker position owing to the length of Wilf's contract and the likelihood that Wilf would want to jump at the opportunity to go to Chelsea.
2. I would be surprised if Wilf would countenance an extended contract given what happened when he signed his last one with us.
3. Gallagher wants to play for Chelsea and to go the World Cup this year.

One possible deal IMO would be:
- we swap Wilf for Gallagher and pay Chelsea some money
- Chelsea include a buy-back clause (at a higher fee) like the one they put in the Ake contract with Bournemmouth.
Gallagher might just agree to that because if he progressed with us sufficiently in Chelsea's eyes, Chelsea would exercise the buy-back clause and
- Conor gets to play regular football now,
- has the chance of playing himself into the World Cup in Qatar
- and be back at his beloved Chelsea in say 3 years time when he will be nearing the peak years of his career.

As I said at the start, we are the club in the weaker position so don't have the best of bargaining chips.

Assuming Chelsea have a busy schedule later in the season, they will be pleased to have CG available for sharing the load. He'll earn more playing time and could easily score a heroic goal or two in close matches, thus realizing a childhood dream. He'll help hoist a trophy, and that will satisfy him for now.

I expect he's much happier with a limited role than Christian Pulisic.

I think you are pretty much absolutely right here. There's nothing I'd disagree with at all. The only "barrier" to making it happen is whether Connor himself would accept it. Nothing else.

I have no doubt at all that we would do the deal (we've already made it clear if Wilf won't re-up then we'll take the money now, and he's pretty much made it clear he won't re-up if a CL club comes in for him). I think Chelsea would do the deal IF indeed they want Wilf. I think they'd like to keep Connor but they also recognise that he's not starter material and staying probably isn't best for his career and if sending him to us would help get them a player they really do want, I can't see them saying "no" even if they let Connor go somewhat reluctantly. Plus, they're not stupid. They saw how he flourished last year and if they have a buy-back clause, they know they'd probably get a better player back in two/three years' time than the player they have, but don't really need now.

It boils down to Connor. We all know he wants to break through at Chelsea. And we all know that's probably not going to happen any time in the immediate future, at least nowhere close to the extent it did last season at Palace. At Chelsea, Connor plays in the Carabao Cup and comes off the bench for the odd twenty minutes in the PL. Will he settle for that, even as a Chelsea supporter, with his England career just taking off?

I can't anticipate what he'll do but what he said at the end of last season about Chelsea isn't really applicable in the harsh light of today, now that a new season has begun. What happens next I won't guess but I think Connor's return to us is very much on the table for discussion, whether it happens or not. And for the most part, it'll be Connor's decision to make.

I don't doubt that Conor is our number one target and for us to be pursuing him, he must have given some sort of indication that he would be open to it.

However, I just can't see it happening at all.

Firstly, £40m as mooted at on here is astronomical, even with England tax, for a player who has only had one decent season with us. If you consider that just this window Jesus was £45m, Phillips £43m, Lewandowski £40m, Chiesa £36m, Bissouma £26m and Zinchenko £30m - all seasoned pro's that have won things or proven themselves at international level for multiple years. for a club of our size, it's too much money and he'd have to be closer to £20-25m.

If he does become available, you'd have to think that there will be clubs that come in for him that are much more capable of helping him meet his ambitions. Teams like Dortmund etc. who could offer European football.

If the 90min article is true, then the fact he turned down West Ham must be for one of two reasons, he doesn't want to go out on loan again or he's been told he will get the opportunity he wants at Chelsea. He'd have been perfect for West Ham with Rice and Soucek behind him and they are a club on the up. If they come back with a permanent offer then you'd think he'd pick that over us.

As much as he loved his time here, it's clear he's ambitious as demostrated by his desire to fight for his place at Chelsea. You'd have to assume that would then play a part in his next move.

If a loan is the only option, I'd rather not have him as we'll only be in this situation again next year. I also don't think he and Eze can play in the same team without massively compromising one if not both of their strengths in asking them to contribute more defensively. I'd rather we try to improve our own player in Eze if a loan is the only option and then bring in someone more aligned to our needs like Berge or Gilmour etc.

It's a dangerous tactic from the club if they are holding out for him later in the window as the risk is that another club comes in that can offer more than us, like European football etc. as much as I'd love him back, I think the needs of the overall team would be better served by using the budget on 2-3 more players than all on him and neglect the other areas of the pitch we so desperately need additions in.

Lot of sense in that regarding Connors true value in the transfer market. Another thing not mentioned much is , how much could he earn from a move.? It’s said he is on £17,000 with Chelsea, not that much in todays salary stakes. In particular for a full international. And when it’s considered how much interest there is in him , surely he would double that at a low estimate. There has been no mention of a new contract for him, so would a move be an attraction on that basis alone?

I wonder if this all hinges on Chelsea signing De Jong ?

It would explain the delay in what should be a simple loan deal.
