Firstly, and most importantly, Very well done to the Lionesses. very proud of them and their performance. What a result. But, I would like to point out that even in spite of a tremendous acheivement in a most enjoyable game, which was much better than many people expected..... Football has NOT 'Come home'. I am with you on this CB. What is all this nonsense about football 'coming home'? It's stated in both my papers as if it's the only way to describe a win in an international football tournament, but it sounds so puerile. Sorry Baddiel and Skinner, it may have seemed a good idea at the time, but, due to a lack of creativity on their part, the media has gone into overkill mode. Rugby was also 'invented' in this country, but you never hear an England win described in that way. Just stop.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Well…I’m ready to get battered on this one…brilliant achievement by the Lions..well done. BUT in my opinion..the commentators were totally over the top. Everything the Lions did was “brilliant”, “amazing”, “world class”. I was sitting there thinking to myself… really? How was that world class? The goalkeeper made an amazing save…really? How was catching the ball from a corner amazing? I’m really delighted for the team, but the bottom line is most Sunday league teams would easily win against them. Let’s not get too carried away… Ok…helmet on…ready for the abuse… That endorses my comment earlier about the commentary on French TV. Completely objective, proportionate and fair. In mitigation, though, I've never watched any women's football, so I can't comment on what qualifies as 'world class' and what doesn't.

Kelly taking her shirt off "empowered women" No, it was a yellow card offence.

Deffo prefer it to the men at England level. But will I be watching Palace ladies live? No way. Watching the men is enough for me on all fronts.

Although I can't get the image of Giggs taking his off out of my head. Like a 70s chest back and front. He probably uses a Dyson on it.

Did the players take the knee? Just heard they did, and respected the German anthem, and no breaking in without tickets, assaulting opposing fans, fighting- how refreshing! Will we have split season tickets before long? I mean one season ticket, obviously more expensive, perhaps not double but a good half more again, and you can go to sp every week, ladys then men - and will womans match of the day be on before or after the men? I didnt like seeing the tall england player swearing and fronting the german girl, its not ladylike! Someone mentioned there were no black girls in the team- strange considering how many black blokes in the england team- but they are all 55 grand better off today- fair play!

I am not a fan of women's football but well done anyway. I suppose it is the way the media reports this stuff, and I don't just mean the win, that annoys me. The BBC has been hyping it for quite a few years and their rhetoric doesn't meet the reality. Well we will see now if attendances at the WPL games go up significantly lots of nonsense about they should earn the same as men well when they are packing stadiums weekly for normal games and charging £50 per ticket they should. At the moment it is a niche sport which because nothing else was on and it was a tournament free on TV got good viewing figures. About 2 world cups ago it was claimed that it was really taking off however the BBC failed to mention that attendances at the league games actually went down the following season. At some point the hype has to become the reality.
