Ha. For a politician, probably an honerst man but a little too left of left for me. Ditto, he's honest like his father which is an admirable trait in anyone. I'm not sure how left wing he is in modern Labour terms, however he's also very much a creature of internationalism....which while practical - as in dealing with the modern world...doesn't require someone to be such a fan of it as he is. I have never voted Tory and only voted Labour for tactical reasons (although I did like Blaire when he came in), so would ideally look to someone in the middle parties. But I see no statesman-like performers there. Much as personally I see Blaire as a kind of disastrous 'dark lord' I think he agrees with you on the main figures on the current political landscape. All the Blairites he wanted to take the mantle faded into the background rather than take the political helm noting the direction of Corbynistic travel of the time. Originally posted by silvertop
Of the Tories, Tugenhat could be the first Tory leader to draw me to that party if Labour continue to be crap. Don't know much about him, seems very middle of the road. Most of the time the people who win leaderships are those with the least enemies....so you never know. But he's definitely an outsider at the moment. Originally posted by silvertop
However, I would go for a Labour MP. I have been banging the Dan Jarvis drum for years. A centrist, he would alienate as few folk as possible, although the hard right and militant left would hate him... just because. A retired major from the paras, he ticks the hard man of action box and patriot and would draw tons of male votes and the Tory press barons would struggle to to their usual Labour leader hatchet job. [Edit. Sorry Hrolf. I forgot that the British media is, apparently, "left wing"] In 2015 he declined the offer to stand for leader as he had just lost his wife to cancer and had a young family to raise. At the risk of being cynical, that's the entire floating female vote right there and would make the Tory press even more careful in their inevitable attack. Meanwhile, he spent another 7 years as an effective and popular Mayor of South Yorkshire. That's the northern vote (re-)secured, especially in populous Yorkshire. And, more importantly, it shows evidence of leadership and ability. He may be hampered by never holding a cabinet or shadow cabinet position. I am honestly not sure that is a handicap as I think Liz or Rishy will find when they go to the polls in 2 years. The real issue with Jarvis is.. I doubt he is a union man so may lack the backing under their perverse electoral system; and I am not sure he even wants it. From your description he sounds like a 'Paddy Ashdown' type figure. He's obviously suffered from Labour's march further left since Blaire. You would think that if Starmer was actually serious about being a centralist that he'd actually involve people like that more. The same implications since Thatcher.

From what I know so far Kemi Badenoch is my preferred choice. Hopefully though by the end of the process we will know much more. Personally, I'd probably give it to however has the highest IQ and emotional stability scores. Other than that....like Napoleon intimated....give me the fecking luckiest, because we need some sodding luck. Edited by Stirlingsays (15 Jul 2022 2.48pm)

I think due to her popularity with the grass roots if Badenoch can get to the last two, the membership will vote her in.

I have spoken to a plethora of members and there is no real enthusiasm for Badenoch. These ladies and gentleman are firmly behind Mordaunt but of course Mordaunt might not reach the final two and if so the members will not have a chance to vote for her.

Edited by Willo (17 Jul 2022 12.02am) A poll of Conservative members would be interesting. The poll I saw for Badenoch was from ConHome, which is a obviously a small sub section. [Tweet Link]

The real Penny: Personally I don’t see an issue with assisted suicide for the terminally ill, unless someone can tell me otherwise. Legal abortion has issues for and against it so I’m unsure there, although it’s done severe damage to the birth rates in Europe and the balance of Europeans being the majority now (in some places) and in the future (in most places). More woke politics would definitely put me off and I’m not surprised she’s another who’s as conservative as some of the Labour Party. They’ve dropped their beliefs as the useful idiots become the majority in lower age groups. Sad but true. Unless Starmer makes a mess of 2024 it’s going to be 1-2 terms of Labour and this leader will be the fall guy. Edited by Rudi Hedman (17 Jul 2022 10.52am)
