Well, it would be nice to celebrate those that first created salves and other soothing balms but I don't think that is what is going on. I continue to suggest people read what the Council actually said not the Daily Mail's rant about what it implies. Anyone actually believing the Daily Mail's take on anything needs serious therapy. Or is not just credulous but dangerously gullible. This seems more balanced from Sky News in June 2021 Glasgow's review into statues and place names was already under way before the controversy began last year. (this refers to Colston's statue, which is now to be found in L Shed in Bristol - Mapletree) Members of the public there will be consulted on the future of statues in their city, such as 19th century military leader Field Marshal Frederick Roberts, who is accused of helping to set up concentration camps, and Sir John Moore, who participated in both the Royal African and East India Companies. Of course they intend to remove statues and change street names. Your denial of it is just the usual dissembling from types like you.

Commissioning a report on any matter that might need to be addressed in the future doesn't mean that any decisions have been taken, or that any particular decision is more likely than any other. It simply means that those who might need to take the decisions know the grounds on which they must be taken. Surely it's better that they act on real knowledge than make assumptions? This is just the kind of thing that the gutter press do. Whip up emotions by publishing half-truths, blended with innuendos. This distracts from the real issue. Which is how to square the circle of accepting that the behaviour of our forebears didn't always match the moralities we now hold, whilst honouring the fact that it is our history? It seems to me that there are ways to do that, which can be discussed without getting emotional, and will likely satisfy everyone.
For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally. |

It isn’t an assumption that Glasgow City Council is facing a £20,000,000 shortfall in it’s budget and has far more urgent social problems to address.

Wasn't this report commissioned quite some time ago? Deciding priorities will always produce disagreement. That's the nature of having boundless needs and limited resources.

Of course they are intending to remove statues and rename streets and building as part of the woke agenda of "who controls the past, controls the future" - 'the most effective way to destroy a people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history' [Orwell].

As we are going round in circles, we will just to wait and see what actually happens, won't we? My guess? There will be some acknowledgement and establishment of context, but the story won't be erased. It will be updated and continued. This is a journey, not a destination.
