Further to my previous post, here is a the relevant question and answer from the IFAB website regarding Liverpool’s second goal. The FAQs give guidance on a variety of scenarios regarding the offside law - the one below describes the exact situation which occurred on Sunday. I repeat that it is shocking that top referees do not actually know the laws of the game and how they should be interpreted. An attacker (Team A) in an offside position and a defender (Team B) jump for a header and compete for the ball. Neither of them touches the ball which goes to another Team A player who is in an onside position and scores. What is the correct decision? The referee awards an indirect free kick to Team B. It is an offside offence because the attacker clearly attempted to play the ball which was close and this action impacted on the opponent. (The International Football Association Board -IFAB - is the law-making body of football) Thank you roman, great find! As stated, it was clearly offside, not only in the footballing terms that we are used to and have all grown up with but also in the current laws of the game. How they got it SO wrong is beyond me and smacks of bias rather than incompetence. Anyone operating as the VAR should be fully aware of this situation as it’s not even an obscure one or uncommon situation. It is such an appalling decision that the officials responsible SHOULD come out and actually apologise and not just hide behind the usual veil of silence. Edited by Phil’s Barber (27 Jan 2022 7.32pm)

At present officials are not permitted to make comments to the media but I accept many would be delighted if this was altered and they were encouraged to explain their decisions to supporters. They might even receive some sympathy ! I know we keep banging on about this and it can't change anything but when your team is wronged so badly it makes you look at the process in more detail.

Dermot Gallagher's opinion on Sky Watch posted here argues that a subjective decision was made on Firmino's impact on interfering with the game. Fair enough, most of life can be subjective. But if the VAR controller subjectively thinks that if Firmino wasn't standing in the six yard box waiting for a cross to attack Mitchell would still be standing there on his own like a lemon instead of back-tracking to Oxlade Chamblerain behind him, then they should be sacked.

I saw this at the time, Gallagher was floundering trying to defend the non-offside decision, both ex-players were adamant it had to be offside

For each official to have such a sub-par performance, including the lino, all during the same game, well the odds must surely stack up. Personally I think of it as a level of collusion, albeit at a subconscious level, to ensure LiVARpool went away with the spoils. All major decisions went Liverpool's way, in fact the officials showed a brazen bias throughout the game. Yes, the whole world can see how VAR is used to affect a game, legitimate call or not.
