I think in general the current incumbents have done a good job, they have been lucky or clever to get Textor onboard, but the transfer policy over the last 4/5 years has been a shambles, no thought at all to sell on values. i think this last window was excellent, but that is down to Textors money, it seems to have taken a long time to learn it is a business. I think you need to look at the bigger picture. As a Club, it's generally accepted that we were only ' treading water ' for a few years under Roy. We have not been financially able to spend significant sums in the transfer market every year. The objective was to be competitive and stay in the Prem - which we did. I don't think there are any lessons to be learned at all as the business was deliberately being run according to plan. Steve Parish gets offers of either investment or out right take overs all the time. Attracting or identifying the right people is not a simple matter. John Textor has already been more visible than the other American investors, and I think his continued input will be of great benefit. Edited by NEILLO (07 Jan 2022 11.16am)

Yep, in reality we have spent very little in the last couple of years. Quite remarkable really that we have done as well as we have done. Its very easy to say that we should have been buying with sell on value in mind. But these players are either going to be really young, and potentially not ready to step in and do a job, or really expensive. Broadly the guys have been pretty shrewd, money spend on Andros, JT, PVA, Jeff, , Kouyate, Ayew all have been low fees for the impact then have had. And some great free transfers, Guaita Sako etc. We also spent some big money (Benteke, Sakho) that didn't provide excellent value. Its not been perfect, but given our limitations the guys have done an amazing job. I'm sure there are lots of other fans that look at us with envy

I'm sure there are lots of other fans that look at us with envy It is not just transfers fees you need to consider but the whole transfer fee/salary package. There is no such thing as a free transfer at the top level of football - Sako for example was a championship player who we paid £55k a week, at the time one of our highest earners despite never being a regular. Max Meyer is another classic example - 3 years of £125k a week is the same as buying a £15m player and paying them £40k a week (similar to Eze). Sakho and Benteke were financial disasters from from a wage and transfer fee perspective which impacted our spending for the next 4 or so years. Of the players you list as good cost effective purchases all are a certain age so it is unlikely any of them will have any resell value and this was known by the selling club when we bought them - West Ham with both Tomkins and Kouyate in particular were happy to take some money at 27/28 years old as the value in 3 or so years would be nearer zero

Yes of course there are no free transfers in reality. But if we are honest Sako was a v good Champs player, so for 8 mill salary and fee for 3 years is pretty good business. I didn't mention Max for a reason, it was right to take a risk on him, but it never really worked out. On cost effective, I'd still put them both in the cost effective bracket. No, there is no resale, but with limited money to spend, both have made significant contributions to us staying in the league. If we'd have bought either of them in their early 20's it would have cost us double or more. Regardless, whilst there have been some mistakes, and some expensive players that haven't worked out the board have broadly done a really good job given the money available. Even in this last window with Hughes, Olise, and OE. We are picking up guys who are cheaper than they probability should be due to contract length or clauses. We just now need to hope that this new strategy works, and the guys continue to develop.

This really seems to have drifted off subject. Can we either get back to it or create another thread?
