It's hard not to feel for those who want to get the hell out of Afghanistan. Really depressing scenes. Whoever presided over the exit, it was bound to be a disaster and was naive to think that placing and propping up a Western template in the country would hold upon leaving. Still, I'm sure the billions of dollars of top notch military equipment that the Taliban now have and will use will no doubt set the ideal staging ground for future military involvement in the area. Money will flow into the right coffers as per usual.

Biden had little choice but to double down in saying how it was the right thing to do, but there's no getting away from how terrible and hapless it looks and how dispiriting it must be for the military. Then again they have routinely been used by governments for decades. The faux reverence shown towards them is a veneer, whereas the disinterest towards them after their service is more much in line with how the ruling classes actually view and value them.

Just an aside, I don't want to depreciate 'Remembrance Day', but why do charities do all the work supporting wounded/handicapped troops and bereaved families. ?
The Governments sent them into battle, shouldn't they be the ones taking care of the permanently handicapped, perhaps with donations from the wealthy arms corporations ?

And is the Taliban any more of a corrupt, dysfunctional system of governance than anything in the west ?

Is the West still bombing those poppy fields ?

I disengage, I turn the page.

I didn't mean it Olly?

Well you'll just have to go through with it now, Stanley.

Ok, in some senses I'd agree but show me the alternative.

I mean you wanted Corbyn.....and he actually hated the west....so one extreme to the other.

All we get are the choices that the system filters down for us and the system did its best to ensure Corbyn didn't win.

It's just a less extreme version of what the Iranians have.....They filter the choices down to what their system accepts and so does ours.

Except our media unsubconsciously slags them off for it without noticing....well, omitting anyway the fact that we do the same.

Because they agree with it.

There you go then. Maybe he wasn't for the lily livered rules of war and wants a reason to go back in to decapitate the taliban; not give them a black eye.
Who knows but what I have stated about freedom and dying for it has happened many times before. waterloo, WW1 WW2 Vietnam, Korea. And many before that. If I'm wrong then say so. Don't go pitching politics.
Sometimes you have to fight for what you want, not hope you get it.

Wasn"t having a go mate, i"m agreeing with you! But so is smokin Joe- they should stand-as they had x4 the amount and armed to the hilt, but alas , to late now. My point was more how politics intertwine, and you and president Joe both on the same team was rather ironic!

Afghan security forces deaths, the people who snake-eyed Joe says won't fight, are over 70,000 since 2001.

Puts USA deaths, about 4000, into perspective, doesn't it.

That's probably about the same as died in local traffic over that period.

For us only about 20 a year.

It is actually war, I mean we are going into other people's countries fighting them, whether good or bad.

I don't think the idea of our opponents agreeing to suffer losses and not us, is on, certainly the taliban don't think so.

It is just not cricket, speaking of which, what about our friends in sport, the Afghanistan cricket team?

To be fair to them, they hadn"t been paid and knew the president or man in the said Ivory tower was creaming off there shekles, so they might have given up psychologically before the battle began, people at the top creaming off all the money? Where have I seen that before? hmmmmmmm

Agreed.

The media today reflect an unreality on pretty much anything to do with the military.

From my own reading around the subject, I had gained the impression that whilst the Afghan police were an utter farce, and often the cause of many problems, the Afghan army itself, and especially its more elite units, were actually not bad, and could be, with the correct leadership, highly effective.

Starting to think that the betrayal of them might have come from many of them just being literally left to the wolves. Alerts not issued, units not deployed and so on. That the Afghan political higher-ups were actually in collusion with the Taliban, in exchange for them being able to flee with a huge amount of stolen wealth.

Of course, a LOT of dust needs to settle because any kind of objective truth can emerge but it does seem that the Afghan Army was left largely leaderless.

Well thank you Dominic, it's good to have such a proactive Foreign Secretary.

Remembered to set the recorder on before he went on his holidays.

He won't get re-shuffled, not with that lightening speed.

He might have just said, 'I'm average, and just go with group think without planning for B or C outcomes'.

This wasn't unpredictable at all...yes it happened quicker but from an Afghan soldier's perspective not fighting the Taliban makes sense....If you do want to fight them then you wait for a coalition willing to pay your wages after the US has gone.....and you get the hell out of dodge until then.....But most won't want to fight without the US and western back up and logistics.

And who funds the anti Taliban coalition?....the western taxpayer.....as we have this whole time.

This highlights the difference between left and right.
I can agree with some left ideas and actions, certain posters on here ally a dig at biden with a dig at trump and hmg. This was bidens decision so he has to own it.
