This thread would be a lot easier to stomach if one person had said Benteke was a bad signing at the time or even at the end of last season! Fact - we all thought it was an upgrade when we signed Benteke. Fact - both Gayle and Murray asked to leave if they would not be starters. I for one thought the decisions were right at the time and Im willing to bet 99% of the people on here now moaning did too. Hindsight makes everyone look like a genius if they conveniently forget how they thought at the time!

Actually Benteke didn't sign until Aug 2016. GM was sold Sept 2015 leaving us with Wickham, Campbell and Gayle...Wickham injured and we were in the doo doo.
A lot of people thought it was a mistake at the time. we should have said "yeah you're number one Glenn" and held on to him.

This!
And I posted at the time that not keeping Murray was a huge error.

The trouble is we never have an adequate, constructive midfield where the player can hold the ball long enough for strikers to get into position.
That is why we never realised the potential of Gayle and Murray.

It is not surprising that Benteke struggles.
Put the like of Fabrigas in there and we will score, even Wilshere or Shelvey would be good as, whatever their other faults, both can hold and pass the ba.ll accurately.

Since promotion we have never found a thoughtful and composed midfielder. If we stay up this should be addressed

Glenn is now being talked about as on the verge of an England call up!!

Well done Messrs Parish and Pards for your judgment!!!!

We have plenty of possession in some games and did when Gayle was here, in first halves, at home. He just didn't make any space, make any runs, show himself to want it in a particular place or path. He was good at slotting a loose ball the defenders weren't stood up for or he was their first. Although as you say, we've rarely ever had a midfielder who can regularly play a pass to show the striker, that's for you pal, now run on and score.

Then you'll be chastising nearly the whole division then as it took a Bristol city offer he refused and a big club in Newcastle but step down in football to get an offer and for Gayle to take a step back to take 2 steps forward. That's what it takes sometimes. Talks of an England call up are exaggerating his progress, unless options really are lean.

It wasn't that long ago that Puncheon, Dann and Ward were being talked about as England possibles but options never got quite that lean

A Fair point and probably why I should have googled the dates before opening my mouth! That said at the time I'd still have considered Wickham an upgrade - am I wrong in saying that Glenn was nearing the end of his contract? Seem to remember thinking the money was a lot for a player that wasn't likely to sign again. Could be wrong there though.

So unlikely I didn't even read or notice it's Glenn being mentioned for a call up and not Gayle. Neither will happen and the same applies to Glenn. He took a step down from Bournemouth to hopefully end up going 2 steps forward. He has. Net result is one step forward.

Great interview with Muzza just now on the Premier League Show. Even if it was set in Brighton.
God I miss him! The flick-ons, the runs into the six yard box, the crafty nudges on defenders, drawing fouls to give us breathing space, the passion......how we could have used his goals this season.
Anyway, I'd better shut up before being reminded that "he wanted to leave". Enjoyed wallowing in 5 minutes of self-pity, that's all...
