Well it is, it's pulled more people out of poverty than any other known economic device in human history. Why are they bringing up the free market in conversations? The Today programme tried to do a lot for the 'free market' this morning: coincidentally just as Monarch crashed, and the govt announced it was putting more money into HS2 infrastructure, the programme wheeled out various journalists, authors of new books, and Philip Hammond himself to praise capitalism for its great achievements - just in case any of us were having any doubts about its ability to solve everything. This was a no-foodbanks, no-wage-cut, no-urban-squalor, no-rural-poverty, no-cuts-health-service, no-cuts-education-service, no-zero-hours-joke-wages, no-phoney-self-employed-status, no-crazy-house-price, no-lack-of-social-housing morning. All is well. Go to work. Smile. Vote Tory.

Hammond's analysis of the failure of socialist government in the 70s is spot on.

The Tories are far from perfect, many of their supporters only support them because they are self interested in keeping hold of their stuff and maintaining advantage. I'm more interested in supporting and creating an effective meritocracy, but one which also treats the vulnerable fairly. The Labour party is obsessed with equality....this notion that not only that we are all equal (only a half truth) but that we all deserve an equal share in the wealth of a nation......A utter lunacy in a world where capital can take flight. The people who suffer most from socialism are the poor....in two ways....one they quickly become poorer....two...and perhaps worse...they were lied too by people who then finger point the blame at others.

Labour's policies would make the position of our poorest far worse after the initial spend.

Labour's policies would make the position of our poorest far worse after the initial spend. 2 big ways to bust unfairness and protect the vulnerable is to tighten up tax avoidance and evasion and increase wages. Wages of course are rising at the lowest pay levels, even if it's very slow, which is no doubt safer. Either that or become a high exporting economy instantly or not keep the very frail alive when there's money needed to support the unlucky or just irresponsible who think they have a right to certain life choices and circumstances. The country has been mismanaged for years and the self interest in the here and now is a cause. When I hear people complain that their holiday has cost more than last year I have little sympathy. There are big issues this country has to face and until it finds a way for the economy to expand without relying on consumption and us spending money at House of Fraser or on cars on HP, it won't get any better. The country needs to be competitive and Brexit might do it eventually. I don't see it happening inside the EU. I don't believe either can do it until big changes happen and it took years with a collective drive by the Germans. We're too wrapped up in ourselves to knuckle down like that unless the opportunity falls in our laps.

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |
