In an interesting development, those involved in tearing down the statue of a confederate soldier are turning themselves in to the police today. Even the ones who were not subject to warrants. We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football. |

Statues shouldn't always be viewed as commemorations but as reminders of the past. I wouldn't imagine that any right thinking person would glorify statues of slave traders or war criminals. However, they have a place in history and as such should remain where they are. Air brushing history is not a productive endeavour and lest we forget the struggles of the past. Yeah I bet people love seeing reminders of how their grandparents were slaves whenever they go to the park, and how many people fought to keep them as slaves. I know I'd like to be reminded whilst having my lunch, about how my grandfather was owned. I notice however there doesn't seem to be too much focus in the 'history and culture' of the south about just how wrong they were about slavery, jim crow laws, lynchings, fighting against the civil rights movement etc. Surely we should have these national monuments right out where everyone can see them, in popular public parks across the south. But a lot of statues to those 'Good old boys' who fought to keep it.

Those who ignore history are likely to repeat the same mistakes. Sadly, 'racial' and religious friction is inevitable when you have differing cultures in close proximity. It isn't statues that are the problem, it is people.

I'm all for remembering slavery and segregation - Its just that I'd rather not do it through iconography that depicts the people who wanted it, rather than those that suffered because of it. I went to Auschwitz - Not a statue commemorating the leaders of the Nazis - They managed to remember the holocaust without a statue of a proud Nazi Commandant in full glorious pose. I'll stick to Primo Levi.

It's very much under 1 percent of the neo Nazi population.....Some guy said it so it must be true. So remember next time you are being critical of Nazis that only a few of them actually want to go out and physically harm you. So hashtag....etc etc. Edited by Stirlingsays (17 Aug 2017 6.34pm)
