A good work out against a very good side. We didn't look quite at our best, and it's clear that a few additions are needed, but the sysetm is working better than I think most of us expected. Loftus-Cheek looking like he might make a decent starter rather than just a body in the squad. Spot on... we'd have lost a game like this 3 nil 12mnths ago... we've only played the formation in 4 games. Yet again you can see an improvement from the Metz game.. I'm happy with what I've seen..i do agree though with the comments about Benteke being isolated at the moment. Another plus was yet again kids being involved. Edited by Lyons550 (05 Aug 2017 5.18pm)

Lot of positives from today, mainly Loftus cheek and the young kid. My thoughts.. 1.Puncheon should not be on the pitch, let alone captain. 2. LC and Luka should be the 2 centre mids. 3. Townsend should be one of the front 3 and not wing back. 4. If we're playing 343, the other 2 forwards need to get much closer to benteke who looked totally isolated..(Although he should have scored a hat trick) 5. We need to buy a 'leader/organiser' CB. Be intesting to see if this is the tram that starts next week. Needs tweeking in my opinion. Edited by spartakev2 (05 Aug 2017 5.28pm)

They're an irregular Champions League club. No directly comparable English club but perhaps some combination of Spurs/Liverpool/Everton.
Cant remember last time any of these teams finished 10th. Perhaps you meant Chelsea Let's hope you are right as they looked a cut above.

Schalke have players like Goretzka, Max Meyer, Geis and Embolo. It's a big difference in quality and a draw in a brand new system desperate for additions is a result we can all be very pleased with imo. That's the whole point: 10th was a disaster for Schalke, just as it would be for Everton, Spurs, or Liverpool. For us, it would be tied for the second greatest season in our entire history!
If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

Thought they looked ordinary. Solid defence? But can't remember them having a shot on target (apart from thd goal). We had more chances and should have won

The sloppiness in our play which is probably down to lack of understanding of this formation is going to give us major problems in the coming weeks. These players just don't seem to be good enough to play with 3 at the back. Prem sides will be even better at taking the chances with us giving the ball away so easy and not being able to hold onto it when receiving a pass in tight situations? I hope I'm wrong but I can see the same problems as we had at the start of last season under Pardew. Plus we appear weaker in our squad without Cabaye and McArthur available? Luka needs to be in midfield and Tompkins in his place at the back. It's obvious to see that in my opinion and even then that will only help a small amount as that back 3 will be under so much pressure from prem sides. I'm very worried for my team and my sanity over the coming months :-( Having now watched the second 45 I'm still of the same opinion as I had at half time and in the other matches I've seen and heard from others about :-(

Townsend I thought had a good game I worry how often he'll be exposed behind him. Would still like to see him played as the third forward. And if not then we absolutely need a third forward of a higher quality than we had today. Hugely impressed by Jason's vision and awareness however we need a better starting XI in that forward role. JR and Loftus-Cheek both looked excellent, proper quality additions. Both absolutely first team starters for me. Team looked extremely comfortable on the ball. Just lacked something in the final third.
