Working must always be a route out of poverty - not a means of subsistence. If they aren't, then the value of working is eroded as is the ethical imperative - and that leads to a greater allure of gangster culture - when you're spending 50 hours a week working a McDonalds to stand still, but some guy from the estate is earning 10k a week driving a nice car and has all the trapping of success, for what appears to be no real work - selling drugs - its an attractive prospect. Pretty much true of what every generation has said about the following generation.

Agree with this too. I would say black people blame white people for a tough life because there seem to be more rich and "privileged" or even "controlling" white people.

In a surreal moment, I was actually racially abused walking through Canterbury high street by a pissed up hobo this evening. Having been swimming earlier in the day, my hair (curly) had morphed into something of an afro which was apparently enough to convince the Tenants-soaked lady that I'm black, despite the annoyingly contradictory evidence of my skin being white. Anyway, she repeatedly shouted "You f***ing gollywog" at me as I walked past and told me to "f*** off on the boat I came in on". It was done with such conviction that for a fleeting second I did actually wonder if I was black. It was tempting to shout "If I'm black why do I have such a tiny p****?" at her, but I was holding my 10 month old daughter at the time and it seemed inappropriate. Anyway, not sure if that helps the debate in any way (I haven't read any of it) but I felt like sharing.
We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold... |

Demographics, and a lot of wealth is inherited.... also whites/Asians out perform us educationally... It stings saying it, but it's true. If we admit it... we've more chance of catching up. There needs to be a change in attitude in the black community, accept our faults (criminality/lack of role models/breakdown of family unit/etc) and start to fix them... we need to hold ourselves to the same standards the whites/Asians do... get our young boys outta gangs and in college/university. I want it to be the norm for black people to be in further education. Can't see it happening in my lifetime thou

People are trying to help change this situation and try and get young black people in a better situation. I think this will take time but I think you might just see it in your lifetime.

How do you know you were targeted by colour... my nephew was stopped, they were looking for someone who matched his description... a lot of street crime in London is committed by young black males, the nature of the crime means there is often a good description of the perpetrator, that's why police sometimes stop young black males... they're just following up leads... this was explained by a black senior police officer on LBC. Someone phoned in, and genuinely said black crime should be investigated differently... that unless the crime was violent, a watered down approach was better. I started a thread on here about me moving my car a short distance and getting a ticket for not wearing sit belt... I thought to myself... I wonder if it's because I'm non white, in a 99% white Sussex town. Turns out... the copper is a jobsworth... he gets everyone. Sometimes people are arseholes... doesn't make em racist. Mate it was not a one off, at first I was not sure but after a while it became obvious.

The problem with young black crime is so noticeable. I don't blame anyone in these areas for looking at young black people with suspicion. I know I do. Like Chris Rock said.... "we can blame the media all we like... but when I'm at a cash point, it's N****rs that I'm looking out for"

"we can blame the media all we like... but when I'm at a cash point, it's N****rs that I'm looking out for" Yeah, I get that, but its not just black people I look out for, there are plenty of scummy types around our way who'd rob someone who aren't black. Big problem with Pikeys and Chavscum around our side of Reading. I was listening to some new gangster hip-hop over the weekend, and it definitely seems more about the glamourisation of being a gangster than more classic material (and a lot lazier). With Ice-T and NWA, Cypress Hill it seems more in line with country music in that its recalling life, rather than promoting a lifestyle. Edited by jamiemartin721 (07 Aug 2017 1.59pm)

It's a difficult conversation to have... I don't know of any other ethnic group that seems to have criminality inter woven in to its culture. I just see it as holding young black people back. Life is hard regardless... it just seems they're making it unnecessarily difficult.
