I would be interested to know how you'd plan on feeding the world if everyone was vegan

I think if the OP campaigned for a ban on Bovril starting at Selhurst he might get more people on his side. The slaughterhouse point is spot on, when I was a young lost soul who used to get threatened by people with morals a veggie colleague explained that most carnivores could not kill what they eat - there's an overly casual attitude to meat-eating and a lot of denial, hence the defensiveness. I am sadly a pathetic hypocrite - I was pescatarian for about four years till I shacked up with my other half who is Poilish - and if meat is put on the table I'm too weak to turn it down. But her diet is much less meaty than it was - my nut roast (sage and ginger in the oil which sautes the shredded veggies, breadcumbs and cashews) and my aubergine lasagne are to die for - it wasn't my meat what wooed her. Though it is not vegan, a lot of (most) people don`t realise Bovril has been veggie for more than a decade now. Edited by lankygit (18 May 2017 11.14pm) Edited by lankygit (18 May 2017 11.32pm)
Is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour? [Link] |

And why is it that veggies/vegans want to eat food that looks like sausages/burgers....why not look like flowers or plants. This is one of the most common and most ill thought out, silly, questions I, as a veggie ( not totally vegan but striving to get there), get asked, and also so simple to answer. If I prepare and cook it, it looks like what it is. If I buy it ready prepared and ready to cook it usually resembles a meat product (ask the producers why, not the users).

Veganpower the druid has some good points. Firstly, the wasted farming land to feed the live stock. There is enough farmland to feed the world 3 or 4 times over. Second is the appalling state of industrial livestock farming. Even milk production is cruel to the animals, which need to be kept relatively stress free merely to be able to produce milk. Let alone how intensive beef production livestock is treated. Third is about your own health, high intake of red meat isn't so good for the average person. Unless you can use up all the extra protein and fat, your health will suffer. Anyhow, I have no problem swatting flies. And I get extremely excited if the cat catches them pesky squirrels which invade my loft. And if it was legal to kill badgers and foxes...... I haven't eaten meat since 1981. I don't like the taste/texture. I drink milk, eat eggs, shoot squirrels, and am applying for a gun licence to shoot deer (destructive fekkas). Edited by Tim Gypsy Hill '64 (19 May 2017 12.20am)

Well it doesn't and pigs are cute, so can you stop paying for them to be killed please? Thank you, your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. Now you see you've lost this thread. You started off just asking if there were any other vegans (reading the thread I would guess the answer is not many) but now you're dictating to others what they must and mustn't do and for that my friend there is one simple response... f@ck right off!
Cynic or realist? It's a fine line! |
