Is this the same Alan Smith who took us to the old Division One title earning himself the League Manager's Association ‘Championship Manager of the Year’ in the process and who in his first season with us in the Premiership took us to the semi finals of both cup competitions?

there is an oddly and sadly neglected thread on Alan Smith in Nostalgia Talk where you can vent your respective spleens

Not Ron's best appointment.

A stockbroker urged me to buy a stock that would triple its value every year. I told him, at my age, I don't even buy green bananas!

Disliked and worst manager are two different subjects but some could fall into both list.

As for managers leaving us for another team, that seems to happen time and time again for some reason and there are two sides to every story but the truth never seems to come out. Venables leaving the first time was always going to happen due to his relationship with QPR & Jim Gregory and I seem to recall that Ray Bloye was instrumental in Venables leaving.Although he appears to be the villain the second time round he was ably assisted by Goldberg. Due to his earlier achievements I will leave him out along with people who's only failing was their incompetence.

This leaves me with in first place by a mile Mullery who was a horrible, bitter creature.

Joint second and third is Gradi & Francis closely followed by Burley, all utterly charmless characters who never developed any affinity with the club or supporters.

Vennables stated in his autobiography that he'd received a phone call from George Graham telling TV that Raymond Bloye had offered GG his job. TV confronted Bloye and was told he wasn't as indispensable as he thinks. That (TV says) is his reason for looking for work elsewhere. George Graham later confirmed TV's version.
Doesn't excuse TV taking all our best players with him mind you!
The second time TV was at Palace I think he really did what many of us would have done in his position. When someone with more money than sense hero worships you and will pay almost anything to get you, most honest people will admit they'd at least be very tempted. When it all went pear shaped he did accept a reduction in what he was owed and left quietly. The real idiot in that soap opera was Goldberg.
That said, second time around I never felt we really had a hungry/determined TV. More of an "I'm being paid a fortune so I suppose I'd better show up on matchdays'. Fenwick was running training FFS!

Alan Mullery what was Noades thinking

I have prepared one of my own time capsules. I have placed some rather large samples of dynamite, gunpowder and nitroglycerin. My time capsule is set to go off in the year 3000. It will show them what we are really like.

Pardew is the most baffling choice ever. The guy kept us up twice and took us to a cup final. If we stay up this year he will be remembered by me with fondness for the first 12 months. Yeah he left us in a sticky situation but he should have been sacked in the summer.

For me purely in terms of forgetfulness George Burkey was crap. The worst I have ever felt was when Dougie left. Still love the man but it's taken time for that wound to heal.

Pardew arrogance got to me. The statement about clean sheet not important . Despite early success . The state he left the club in is enough of a reason to hate the guy. Destroyed team spirit. Burley football was bad but look at the budget he had to work with free transfer and youth products. Pardew broke the transfer record on at least 3 occasions and left the team unfit and uninspired .

In more recent times, Peter Taylor.

Playing legend but sucked the soul out of the side as a manager.

Well I think Simon's head is large; always involved in espionage. (Name that tune)
