If I'm in a fight with someone for my life, and I have a taser, stick and a gun... I'm using the gun.

The liberal left (of which I admire on many issues) are as much a threat to black people in the USA as the far right are.
Kids are dying in huge numbers due to gun violence and no one says a word... A white police officer kills a criminal.,, and mass protests are organised. The crime stats for the black community in USA are shocking, but no one protests about that.

Yeah, fair call - That's self defence. But in reality, if someone is beating the s**t out of you, and your in a fight for your life, you won't get a chance to use your gun anyhow. The point of being a police officer is that its usually you coming onto the scene where someone is taking that beating.

My family live in Ohio now, around Troy/Cincinnati area. They work hard, obey the law and have not had one single problem with police. They have been victims of crime from fellow black people, and my aunt is now planning her next move because she is worried about her son getting involved in crime.
In my experience and that of my family... They feel BLM are very selective in their protests... Look at the stats... Young black males commit more crime than any other racial group... Solve that problem and I bet the tiny amount of blacks killed by police will get even smaller.
The dude that got shot in the chest 6 times... Had a illegal firearm a history of robbing people, also sexually assaulted a child and people are treating him like a civil rights hero.
Black people need to fix their own communities... They need to accept that have a criminal element in their culture, and start fixing it.
Not blaming a copper who made a error of judgment when dealing with a violent armed criminal.

So the police are right in acting as his executioner? The man was restrained. Doesn't matter what he was, he was no longer a threat.

I happen to agree on blm. Until the issue of poverty and disparity are resolved along with racism and abuse of power the issues of black america will continue. The victim is no hero, but still a victim none the less

They didn't act as executioner... language like that fans the flames.
The police were arresting a violent criminal, when they saw a gun, at best the cops panicked, they were scared (who isn't when confronting a armed criminal?) shot the man... do you think the police set out that day to kill someone?
BLM matter are a disgrace in my eyes.... it seems the only black lives that matter are the ones killed by other races. Also the chants about putting wings on pigs, then saying they are a peaceful movement just shows them for what they are.

Jamie... I travel to USA 3 times a year... I speak to black family members all the time.. Chicago is a war zone, young black men are killing each other, BLM don't say a word, why not?

This sort of thing happens to white people as well but it's not really a story but when a black man gets shot it's like the end of the world has come.

Black men get shot and killed by police at a rate that is alarmingly disproportionate to their slice of the overall population. This is what Black Lives Matter was created to publicise.

Fair play fella.

Problem is, the issues of poverty, race and the systems which perpetuate the issues go right to the heart of the interests dictating US domestic policy (in my opinion from over here in the UK with a different skin colour).

It's a f***ing nightmare.

This DVD selling guy was wrestled to the ground by the 2 cops, thats not an issue as they had gotten a report he was packing and he refused their commands. But then they just plain murdered him on the ground, and THEN pulled the guys gun out of his pocket. Conveniently both cops body cams "fell off", but you have 2 cell phone accounts, 1 CCTV from the store(taken by police) and 2 very close to the scene eye witnesses.

What is new to this situation is independent video evidence. This is only a recent phenomena due (of course) to everyone having a video camera in their pocket now.

In the past, police reports, usually corroborated by multiple colleagues, have justified the use of deadly force due to a imminent threat from the suspect. What is truly disturbing is that so many incidents where independent video footage exists directly contradict the officers' reports.

Basically, this has been going on forever; but those of us outside the black community are only finally coming to a realisation that this happens because of cell phone footage.

I think education is the key - informing youths and young adults that carrying illegally, resisting arrest are not going to go in your favour.

Ending gang culture, cleaning up streets, having better community activities.

Educating officers in high risk situations, not to pull out a gun straight away. Example, the gentleman shot and killed for reaching his ID filmed by his girlfriend - that was needless - cop should have been calmer, etc explained the situation and got his compliance.

Ok, it's easy for me to say all this in hindsight, but protesting won't get action any quicker than parents and communities working together to weed out these actions.

This was once a quality forum....

What would be interesting would be the manner of all the shootings. If white guys are killed like that black guy after being pulled over for a broken light, for example. Or pinned down then shot.

Analyse that and that would give us the answer as to whether some of these killer cops do it out of racism.

The Guardian has been tracking all police killings - that they can find or get reported to them - since 2015.

The crazy thing is that local police departments are not required to report fatal encounters to anyone. Actually tracking them all is probably impossible without federal legislation, which is highly unlikely given the gridlock in Washington these days.

I can only view this from a white persons perspective but it sounds like Black lives matter but only if they are killed by white policeman.

Some people would rather perpetuate division and ignore certain realities.

Of course some police officers put self preservation before everything and have been conditioned to have a lower regard for life that most of us find palatable. Equally they are doing a job that most of us would not do.
